Education researchers: Learn how to write for non-academic audiences through @AnnenbergInst's EdResearch for Action writing fellowship program, which I direct! .***New this year: not just for K-12 researchers anymore.*** .Apps due by Friday, November 15.

This paper began its life as a panel at a @theNASEM event launching its reports on the 20th anniversary of IES. Thanks to @KenneDibner for connecting us as authors. Very glad that this work has found a home at TCR!.

From the conclusion: "Rather than building our enterprise around what can be studied well using our existing methods and frameworks, let’s embrace answering messier questions and build new methods and frameworks where needed to answer them.".

We provide suggestions for a framework for what contextual information is most essential to include and for other changes to research processes that will promote this approach. We also include examples where researchers have done this work well.

Why? Because "for teachers and school leaders, the idea that an intervention may not work in every context and for every student is not a problem to explain away; it is one that is imperative to address.".

Our central argument is that the context in which an intervention is implemented and the characteristics of participants are integral components of the intervention, and we need to study those components just as seriously as we do the intervention itself.
