Why isn't USACE releasing more water from Isabella before likely high inflows this weekend? Capacity is limited (@86% now), but only 5400 cfs are being released now, whereas they were releasing 7500 cfs back in April/May. Structural worries and 178 precautions I guess @SJVWater.

Any idea why inflow at NF @kernville to lake Isabella peaks at 4 or 5am? Is it bc of evapotranspiration in the kern drainage during the day, or water engineering? @mdettinger Data from last column of

I’m delighted that our paper on the Multicellularity Long Term Evolution Experiment (MuLTEE) has, at long last, been published. This paper establishes the foundations of what I’d like to work on for the rest of my career. 1/25. Free, full access link:

Lopez is at 100%.While this is a positive sign for native flora, fauna, and ag, I worry about the downstream communities. Lopez was not built primarily for flood mitigation. The buffer it has provided in these last months will be reminisced in coming storms.

I look forward to reading the next installments. I thought of Tom Petty’s ā€œFree Falling over Mulhollandā€¦ā€ often while reading this. FYI: There is a perfect description of adiabatic winds on page 288 & I bought my copy from Oliver at Red Rock Books Ridgecrest @AlgonquinBooks 5/5.

From these it’s clear why Californians look forward and not back. This story is not over. We have just begun to understand what happened. 4/5.

The wounds on the California landscape and people are heart wrenching. There has been starshift (@GabbyBellot) in the Owen’s valley - green to brown; productive to poisonous; sugar to salt. Miracle Country belongs on the same shelf as @RebeccaSolnit and Didion. 3/5.

…are interleaved with personal experience to form a memorable whole. To read Miracle Country is to gain an understanding of what it was like to grow up in these landscapes in the recent past, and how the area has been shaped by greedy decisions with long term consequences. 2/5.

ā€œMiracle Countryā€ by Kendra Atleework is a must read for travelers (students) of the eastern Sierra. Personal, historical, revealing, enraging, lyrical and perfectly structured between memoir and recent California history. Mulholland, water wars, and oppression of the Paiutes 1/5

The raccoon dog stories are not a nothing burger, but also not new news to students of SARS-CoV-2. There are three glossary entries in @DavidQuammen’s Breathless. Are these the same samples referred to on pages 283 and 305? A picture of the much maligned creature below. Wiki phot
