Having a family that doesn’t understand how academia works is both a blessing & a curse. You can never disappoint them b/c they’re super proud of anything you do. But they often don’t grasp the significance of your achievements or what they cost you.

Recently reviewed a # of papers on “race effects”. A reminder: Race doesn’t cause, affect or shape anything. Race is a social construct that is, in & of itself, meaningless. The meaning people attach to race & the discrimination they perform on the basis of it produce inequities.

We wouldn’t say that gender causes the pay gap between men & women, but rather that sexism contributes to this disparity. Similarly, race doesn’t shape [insert disparity]. Racism is the culprit.

As someone who’s dealt w/impostor syndrome, some advice that’s been helpful for me is this: Confidence is a skill, not a personality trait. Skills can be practiced & developed over time. Traits are rigid & difficult to change. Knowing the difference has made all the difference.

Let’s not talk about Black poverty & family structure without talking about discrimination in housing, labor, courts, & prisons that rob Black ppl of opportunity for advancement. It contributes to a culture of ignorance that obstructs racial progress.

Was FaceTiming w/my 6yo niece & she is definitely life goals. Sis sleeps on silk sheets, has her own snack drawer, does kids’ yoga, & takes naps daily. I’m just tryna get on her level 😩

Had a work call with @DrSherryZhang & she ended by asking about my self-care plan for the holidays. Didn’t have an answer & don’t wanna get caught slippin’ twice. So, for accountability & to promote healthy living, here’s a list of things I plan to do to protect my mental health:

Calling it anything else contributes to an epistemology of ignorance that enables white supremacy & these racist terrorist acts 👇🏾

Media, stop using "racially motivated". Stop using "racial slur". Call it what it is. It's "racist". It's "racism". It's "white supremacy". Stop trying to sugar coat it.

This is one of the best weeks I’ve had in a looonggg time. I didn’t even realize how much I was holding in until I finally exhaled during the inauguration. They tried to cut all the flowers, but they couldn’t stop the coming of spring (P. Neruda)...Happy Friday, y’all!

So many issues here. As a family sociologist, two things immediately come to mind: 1) I’m struck by how quickly he evokes his status as a married man with kids to fend off accusations of racism. You can be a “family man” and still be racist. These things aren’t mutually exclusive

........in the statement, Matt Rowan blames his racist comments and use of the n-word on type 1 diabetes. HE BLAMED RACISM ON HIS SUGAR SPIKE.

My mom works in childcare. In HS, I got my hair done for free b/c my mom kept my cousin’s kids while my cousin worked at the salon. Best perk wasn’t the free hair-do’s. It was what their system taught me about extended family support networks & women’s labor force participation.

What perks did you enjoy as a kid bc of your parents jobs? My parents ran a computing company and they had a huge computer with a very primitive couple of games I’d play. They also has a coke machine on the honor system and I drank those all the time.

One unexpected outcome of participating in the NCFDD Faculty Success Bootcamp this term has been changing my relationship with work and pleasure. Treats aren’t just rewards we give ourselves after achieving a milestone. We’re human beings deserving of pleasure EVERYDAY. So,...

Me: I’m feeling better now, so we can meet less frequently Therapist: Okay…But I’ve noticed you’re very self-reliant & think you should only ask for help when the world is on fire. I’d hate for our relationship to reinforce that behavior Me: [Side-eye] I’ll see you next week

When we experience loss of this magnitude, it’s difficult to mourn each individual life, and it’s dangerously easy to become desensitized. Thank you, @nytimes for helping us hold on to our humanity. They were not simply names on a list. They were US.

This Valentine’s Day, I’ve been reflecting on all the love and solidarity shown to me by the Black women in my life. Y’all are the real MVP’s, and I don’t know where I’d be without y’all. Happy Valentine’s Day! ❤️
