is it just me or is it quite tasteless to have ‘cheer up, it’s christmas’ on the door to a hospital ward? imagine being unwell enough that you need to be in hospital, or going to visit an unwell relative, and seeing that??

I’m being discharged from hospital today. I’ve spent the past 2 weeks as an inpatient, sectioned in a psychiatric hospital. It’s been the toughest couple of weeks of my life but today I get to go home and figure out how to start rebuilding things.

spoke to a MH professional recently who said I ‘lacked identity’. I told them I felt I had strong identities as a nurse, Queer, Autistic, a cat owner, a home owner, a middle child, creative. They told me those ‘didn’t really count’… genuinely unsure how I was supposed to answer?

on my flatmates ward, they get the new doctors to spend a shift shadowing a HCA and a shift shadowing a nurse- I think this is an amazing idea! Helps to increase understanding of roles in the MDT and helps to orientate the Drs to the ward. Does anyone else do something similar?

keep remembering how the first person who found me collapsed, before I was admitted to ICU 3 weeks ago, asked me what I was doing on the floor, then kicked me (hard) in the shins and chest to see if I was responsive. then they left without calling for any help.

We have revoked the derogation granted to Weston General Hospital. It has become apparent that both the BMA and NHS England were misled over the level of staffing cover. Either local management were unaware they had sufficient senior cover, or they deliberately misled us.

it’s okay to tell people to reach out for help with MH, but reaching out needs to be met with compassionate, knowledgable, well funded and resourced services who can respond appropriately. otherwise, reaching out has great potential to worsen a crisis. MH services need reform 💔

@chronicallybeee I guarantee that some things I do when I’m a patient would be considered icks by HCPs caring for me. hurts when you’re in such a vulnerable position, sometimes just doing what you need to survive, and your HCPs could be bitching about you without understanding those behaviours 😕

I fully support the BMA campaign for hot food to be available for hospital staff 24/7, but I swear at least 80% of the benefits for staff morale could be achieved by returning toasters (and a large supply of white sliced bread + proper butter) to every department in the NHS.

We managed to take my ventilated patient, who’s been in ICU since december, off the unit and onto the roof garden so she could feel the sun and wind on her face today. I’ve never seen someone smile so much. Possibly the most rewarding shift of my career so far!!

@mellovescake Thank you for respecting that request!! Christmas is a really hard time of year for a lot of people, more so when you’re in hospital 💙

I used to get teased because my eyes ‘disappear’ when I smile but I don’t even care anymore. I’d rather be smiling with no eyes than crying 🥰

@Katynurse27 evidently a band 5 nurse who’s been a band 5 for 30 years just isn’t experienced and doesn’t deserve pay to reflect that 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

am I ‘unwilling to tolerate’ waiting to see psych, or am I sensory overloaded in the ED waiting room? am I ‘demanding’ & ‘intimidating’ during my assessment, or am I clearly advocating for my care? am I ‘complex’ & ‘cynical’, or have I been repeatedly failed by MH services?

just finished my final lecture for my masters degree. no more face to face teaching, just my dissertation to write. I genuinely believed I wouldn’t get to this point, so I’m trying very hard to be proud of myself ✨
