hi everyone!! me and a bunch of friends are working on a SF ballot measure to get more funding for muni service and affordability by increasing taxes on ride-hail app companies. we're getting on the ballot by signatures–let's go!! ❤️

@sftransitact
Boston has removed fares on 3 bus lines primarily serving low-income & PoC riders. on the first one, ridership is up 48%.
“Our plan is to continue demonstrating that this works…I have spoken with so many families who have said it’s been life-changing”
what the rest of america thinks SF politics is like: today we are allocating funding for free weed for all queer people
what SF politics actually is like: today we're accusing a tamale lady of catering to drug dealers and voting to approve cop robots that blow people up
i’m sorry i am trying to keep my posts more positive but this image is going to haunt san francisco forever. we have one of the strongest economies in the US, empty hotels offering rooms, amazing health professionals. yet this is where we’re telling unhoused people to go. horror.
We ran this full-page ad in
@nytimes
and several local papers today.
Human drivers aren't good enough. America can do better, and it is time we fully embrace AVs.
so you’re telling me it’s september and the california legislature is now done for the year after failing to pass a real eviction moratorium, meaningful police reform or even a bill that would let you turn one house into two houses
hi folx, for pride month I'm thinking of using my transit shoppe to raise money for a local lgbtq+ org
two things
1. feedback on the below is welcome
2. any suggestions for which bay area lgbtq+ org(s) I should give the profits from pride items to? (will be 100% of profit)
facebook changing its name rn feels like in that game rollercoaster tycoon where if you made a rollercoaster that crashed and killed people you could paint it a different color and the guests in your park would start riding it again like nothing happened
one year since i went to a weekly video call with friends, except my friend Courtney did not make it, because walking between the park and his apartment he was shot by someone with an assault rifle. he was an incredible person, a great friend to ride the bus with, and i miss him.
the way trash cans in sf have that part at the top for recycling but with most of them the stuff just falls right through to the trash part is actually great symbolism for how performative the city can be,,
san francisco is about to hand lyft and uber an incredible gift — while late-night businesses like bars and movie theaters re-open, there are only nine muni routes running within the city after 10pm, with 20 to 30 minute wait times.
what has happened with accessibility of sidewalks and shared spaces in the past year is just an example of how accessibility is treated in general in society – an attitude from abled people of, we need to do this thing now, we'll worry about people with disabilities later
cannot believe san francisco refused to decrease the police force size by even one (1) officer in our budget and now we're talking about potential bus driver layoffs coming.
before he passed, courtney was working on making a regional SF transit map in the style of the NY MTA map. just for fun as a quarantine time project. he did a great job imo. i only have pics of his computer screen unfortunately
SF just voted to move local elections, like mayor, to even years – which see double the turnout of odd-year elections.
the mayor opposed it, saying it was a "group of democratic socialists" deciding "they want to have more control"
it won with >60% of the vote in all districts.
shout out to the young child who keeps calling into SFMTA board meetings asking for the 43 to be returned to the presidio so she can go to the walt disney museum again
making a little
@figmadesign
plugin to make it less tedious to work with maps in your mockups. you can make a
@Mapbox
map image within figma, edit it, resize it, etc
really I'm just tired of copy/pasting screenshots of maps all the time
just looked it up and the total operating expense for 2020 for every transit agency in california was about $7.8 billion
with the same amount of money newsom is putting toward car stuff rn he could double the operating budget of every transit agency in the state for a year+
@PickledEntropy
Woah. That area has a 92% black population, while the other side of the freeway has a 2% black pop. Government-created segregation in action
Thank you to everyone who has reached out. Please understand if I don’t respond right away. I’m devastated. Courtney was such a joyful presence in my life and this was so sudden. I’m sorry Courtney, I know you were going to do so many great things.
sf friends, here's my lil' challenge for you: what % of san francisco's street network can you name from memory?
just start typing names and press enter :)
thread: 110 years ago today, something very good happened: san francisco voters passed ballot props to make sf the first city in the country to have a publicly-operated transit system, breaking the monopoly of our privately run transit company. here’s the story of how we got muni
headlines matter, and our local media is framing these bus stop story headlines in a way that is meant to enrage drivers over minor inconveniences while burying the fact that it is about people with disabilities being able to board a bus or even be seen by a bus operator
the john oliver segment on homelessness was so good, love that he covered how much bigotry there is against unhoused people in liberal cities. “it’s basically Reagan’s attitude from a Whole Foods crowd”
excited about this new poster i’ve been working on for the
@DSA_SF
free muni full service campaign. we’re planning to have these printed for the august chapter meeting and there will be other opportunities to get one in the future!
thread: a month ago, i made a public records request to BART for data on fare evasion citations, including race, age, gender and station. today i got back one year's worth of data, ~12,000 citations from july '18 to '19.
1st, let's take a look at how citations break down by race
she vetoed 3 months of free muni. she turned the great walkway back into the great highway. the tenderloin had to rally for their bus lines back. she has no funding proposal for full muni service.
and now: more free parking!
this will encourage driving & take money from transit
that's it? 20% in exchange for proper wages, benefits and union rights for workers?
the cost of a bus ride in SF has literally doubled since the year uber was founded
@karaswisher
@profgalloway
Dara says Uber will have fewer drivers and higher prices. Predicts average fares in SF will go up 20% if it has to classify drivers as employees.
i’d love to know the inside story of how this ended up being a news article. did this guy just call up the chron and they were like “damn this is news”? does someone at the chron know this person? i don’t understand
Patrick Fondiller and his daughter, Ruby, flew from New York to see Mitski perform at Outside Lands.
After a day in S.F., they drove to their Airbnb in Berkeley, where they noticed the rear window of their rental car had been broken into.

one outrageous thing i've learned about sf's finances recently is how much we spend on overtime for cops & sheriffs. some are adding six figures of overtime to their pay.
all while there are bus drivers sleeping in their cars and teachers unable to afford living in the city.
oof. so a half-hour ebike ride will be go from costing, with tax, $9.76 to $13. or $15 if you don't end your ride at a station.
i am once again asking for municipal bikeshare in san francisco
Moving SF - As San Francisco's Bikeshare program administrator, the SFMTA recently approved a price increase for Bay Wheels stationless e-bike trips that will take effect September 22, 2021.
thinking about how there used to be a community of chess players on market st in sf and then in 2013 the cops confiscated the chess tables and banned it
a few things on my mind here:
• BART has the highest fare recovery ratio of any US transit system
• transit is an investment in a public good, not a way to generate income
• if people can’t afford public transit, it’s too expensive
• don’t blame crowded trains on poor people
94 years ago today – october 21, 1928 – the N Judah opened for service, connecting the sunset and downtown through a tunnel under buena vista park. happy birthday to my favorite muni metro line!
today on my way to therapy i went to
@Vervecoffee
. a homeless person nearby asked me for a coffee, so i got them one. on my way out, the manager pulled me aside and told me not to do that again; that it causes homeless people to come back which makes it not a “safe space”
🙄🙄🙄
