It's a somber evening in New York City, where a police officer and a subway passenger were killed in separate acts of violence that occurred just an hour apart. @chelsiamarcius on the officer: https://t.co/YXHws5b7Gn @chris_maag on the straphanger:

Hey @wildbirdfund — my friend and I found a sick pigeon by our building. We’re rushing him up to you now. We’ve called, can’t get anyone on the phone — trying to make it before you close at 7 pm

A samurai sword. A briefcase full of muskets. A Cartier pocket watch studded with diamonds. The detritus of crime in New York City - all of it! - gets crammed into this dusty basement beneath police HQ. Way to go, @chelsiamarcius! https://t.co/Z4gCrxPkcb @NYPDnews

In the office of the Manhattan Property Clerk, evidence and lost items arrive by the tens of thousands. A small band of officers and civilians has to manage never-ending pressure.

"She keeps track of the expected -- guns, drugs, samples of DNA -- and the bizarre: a gold dental grill, a half-drunk bottle of Smirnoff and a weathered brown suitcase. It is stuffed with muskets." @chelsiamarcius's fascinating look at the NYPD basement.

The @NYDailyNews is where I spent my 20s + early 30s — nearly a decade. Forever a tabloid kid. I support @NYDNUnion and its members, who are on strike today. My friends — truly fantastic reporters — deserve so much better than this. Cc @andrewjulien https://t.co/OEAHvNSYyA

Today, the New York Daily News Union is walking off the job for 24 hours. 🪧🪧🪧 We are fed up with Alden Global Capital’s constant cuts and apparent commitment to shrinking the paper. Here are some reasons we’re taking a stand: 🧵 #defendtheNYDN

The Daily News Union is walking out today, the first time the paper has had a work stoppage since the 90s. I am proud to stand with my colleagues in the street to demand that management and Alden stop whittling away at our paper and making it impossible to adequately do our jobs.

Good morning from Manhattan, where E. Jean Carroll is expected to call her last witness against Donald Trump, and he may testify. I’ve reported on every inch of this case for years, but I won’t be there today. I’m going on strike with my colleagues. https://t.co/r3xToYSZ8x

Today would have been Annabell Rodriguez's 12th birthday. Her life ended in May 2022, when a gunman walked into her fourth-grade classroom in Uvalde & opened fire. This piece is about the bond she had with her classmate, Xavier Lopez, who was also killed https://t.co/6Y9A2yyzbH
