The Canal Street raid, which included more than 50 agents, was supposed to be even larger. Feds had amassed more than 100 agents for the raid, but it was scaled back at the last minute, after details leaked, per 3 people familiar. Raid was a harbinger of what's to come.

He worked for Trump at one of his golf clubs for more than a decade. Then Trump's federal agents deported him by mistake. @luisferre @Haleaziz

When Alejandro Juarez was returned to his homeland, federal agents told him that they were just following orders. Those orders were wrong.

ICE officials "mistakenly expelled Mr. Juarez from the United States, placing him on the wrong plane and erroneously dispatching him across a port of entry to Mexico instead of sending him to a detention center in Arizona" a must-read from @Haleaziz @luisferre
Alejandro Juarez was supposed to be transferred to an ICE facility in Arizona. He has a court hearing in October. Instead, DHS put him on the wrong plane -- and deported him to Mexico. One of the craziest stories I've reported w/ @luisferre

It's unclear how many immigrants like Alejandro are "erroneously removed" by ICE, because the agency hasn't tracked such cases in the past. Critics warn that the missteps in his case could foreshadow the types of mistakes that could become more frequent as detentions ramp up.

Alejandro worked for many years at a Trump Golf Club, was married, and had four children who are US citizens, including a son in the Marines. In a rare acknowledgement, ICE admitted it had mistakenly expelled him without seeing a judge.

NEW: How ICE mistakenly deported Alejandro Juarez to Mexico. Alejandro was detained in NYC, put on the wrong plane and sent to Mexico. He never saw a judge, no deportation order - a likely violation of law. W/ @Haleaziz: https://t.co/657lAjlbga

The raids came not long after some pro-Trump influencers posted videos on social media about the illegal vending that has gone on Canal Street for years.

News of the raid spread, leading protesters to show up and chase some of the federal agents down Lafayette Street as they traveled to the ICE offices at 26 Federal Plaza. More federal agents showed up in tactical gear, along with an armored vehicle, leading to a chaotic scene.

DHS said the operation was “focused on criminal activity relating to selling counterfeit goods.” But some witnesses said some of the men detained were not selling anything, simply standing around. Some men were released, but DHS hasn't said how many arrested or legal status.
