This has been a deeply sad day for all of us at the Wild Bird Fund. We hoped only to see Flaco hooting wildly from the top of our local water tower, never in the clinic. We are grateful to all who contacted us today and all who helped with his rescue.

We are deeply sad to report that Flamingo, our sweet pink pigeon, has passed away. Despite our best efforts to reduce the fumes coming off the dye, while keeping him calm and stable, he died in the night. We believe his death was caused by inhaling the toxins. 📷: Alexis Ayala

A reminder: most fledglings don’t need help. They might be goofy and small, but if they can stand or hop and are covered in feathers, they’re likely fine. Their parents are on the case! A young bird only needs help if it’s partly naked (that’s a nestling), injured or lethargic.

If you ask fledgling blue jays and grackles for their honest opinion on your outfit, make sure you’re prepared for the response.😬 🎥: Suzanne Highland

This gorgeous yellow-bellied sapsucker sustained an injury to his right eye and a concussion when colliding with a window today. We’re providing anti-inflammatory medication and eye care with hopes of being able to send him back out there soon. 🎥: Phyllis Tseng

🚨 Please NEVER put sticky traps on trees to catch lanternflies! This practice is DEADLY to birds, bats, squirrels and loads of native insects, while being useless against the spread of lanternflies. This downy woodpecker was lucky only to have lost his tail.  📷: Phyllis Tseng

“I don’t have anything to put it in.” “I don’t know anything about birds.” “I have cats at home.” “I don’t have a car.” We’re here to tell you that rescuing a small bird is easy, it requires no special equipment, and your cats never need to know! It will be our secret. 🧵 📷:

This downy woodpecker is alive and in care, but sadly several other birds were killed by this v. misguided pest control project at BK Army Terminal. Many trees in the area were wrapped with sticky paper in a likely attempt to control spotted lanternflies. 📷: sarahvaleriart

And just like that...it’s duckling time! We've already got 10 mallard babies in house, all separated from their moms in one way or another. But they’re gaining weight, preening and generally owning the place. Also walking all over their nanny! 📷: Flor Blum

⭐️Special guest alert!⭐️ We had the immense privilege of caring for this piping plover, a precious, threatened shorebird we rarely see at the clinic. This bird was rescued on the Rockaways with a wing injury. He was emaciated and extremely weak on arrival. 📷: Lily Lugo

Two kind samaritans rescued this least bittern from a tree pit on 125th Street in Harlem. Based on this location and her injuries, we suspect a window collision. She damaged some feathers and has 2 toe fractures but seems otherwise in good condition. 📷: Rachel Frank

Our first peregrine of 2023, and what a beauty! Apparently an Uber driver saw this falcon being attacked by a cat, rescued him and dropped him at @NYCACC . There are no wounds, but he is emaciated, which might explain why a cat would even dare. 📷: @tristanahigg

Fledging in the city can be a scary adventure, as this red-tailed hawk fledge from the NYAC nest on Central Park S learned. He got onto a busy sidewalk and was immediately arrested (rescued) by NYPD🚔. He’s fine! We’ll be quickly returning him to his parents. 📷: Phyllis Tseng
