To help bridge the sanitation and conservation sectors, we recently published a report with practical guidelines as part of a Science for Nature and People Partnership:

Future work should incorporate effects on health, food safety, and livelihoods in decision making, like the Watershed Interventions for Systems Health in Fiji, which is already working on the ground to improve human health and ecosystem health: https://t.co/ldhPNVCMW8.

Over 95% of coral reefs had some level of exposure to human wastewater, with many reefs impacted by multiple treatment types and watersheds. An integrated management approach is needed to reduce potential threats to humans and nature. (note differences in scales)

We applied this framework in Fiji, where improved sanitation and coral reef conservation are national priorities, but data is limited. Sewage treatment plants had the largest volume of nutrient effluent, but septic/pit latrines impacted the largest reef area.
