How can improved sanitation benefit coral reefs? These sectors are often siloed, but we developed a spatial framework to assess where we can maximise win-win solutions. https://t.co/nwdV48omFl

Poor water quality and its causes don't follow human-made borders, leading to shared resource conflicts. Check out our recs in @PNASNews on how this could be better addressed in international agreements like @UNBiodiversity. https://t.co/fKBOjp5yxy

Our new paper describes the 1,150 species we found in our urban backyard in @brisbanecityqld over 1yr. Trees, shrubs, & weeds (instead of manicured lawn) provided lots of habitat for a shocking amount of wildlife on an urban lot https://t.co/xqpCHWYV93 in @ESAEcology

Future work should incorporate effects on health, food safety, and livelihoods in decision making, like the Watershed Interventions for Systems Health in Fiji, which is already working on the ground to improve human health and ecosystem health: https://t.co/ldhPNVCMW8.

The condition of ecological watersheds affects the health of people and the downstream environments in which they live. Higher incidences of water-related

Over 95% of coral reefs had some level of exposure to human wastewater, with many reefs impacted by multiple treatment types and watersheds. An integrated management approach is needed to reduce potential threats to humans and nature. (note differences in scales)

We applied this framework in Fiji, where improved sanitation and coral reef conservation are national priorities, but data is limited. Sewage treatment plants had the largest volume of nutrient effluent, but septic/pit latrines impacted the largest reef area.
