Denise Gilmore feels like she’s being taxed out of Humboldt Park. Her property tax bill has ballooned more than 60%. Taxes could hit even harder next year after Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi’s office increased the home’s value by $60,000.

Do you have a smaller regional public with declining enrollment and a student-to-instructor ratio of less than 20 in your area? Then this might be coming your way, too.

WIU has 7,500 students, with 285 tenured and 81 tenure-track faculty (plus about 80 instructors). It's not a great situation, but it's clear to see that the university is going after one of its largest salary line items. https://t.co/qAnl93gMV5

Look at some of these reports from the @govfinanceUIC. They clearly outline that rate increases (and therefore bill increases) tend to be quite large. And that's mostly among public providers. https://t.co/YP75fi6isF

Take Willowbrook's increase in 2023. Depending on your water usage, say 13k gallons (a lot, but not unreasonable if you water your yard), you can easily get to a $ 30-a-month increase. https://t.co/OmpBoKeQcS

Not indexing rates or including annual changes leads to large single year increases regardless of ownership status. A public utility would have just as sizable increases (and have). cc @MPTeodoro https://t.co/9nPbw44MGf

Question: What states adopted (and in what years) the Standard State Zoning Enabling Act before Euclid? I have the states but not the years, and I cannot seem to find them anywhere.

Word is that NBC has managed to finally secure the music rights necessary to sell Homicide: Life On The Streets" to a streaming platform. Andre, Richard, Yaphet, Ned, and so many others who labored on that wonderful show on both sides of the camera will soon regain a full share

This is unequivocally a good thing. Regardless of which one, local elected office is a considerable time commitment, and we should adequately compensate people to do it. Also, it allows more people, some of whom don't run because of financial concerns, to run for office.

New from me and @leland_suzanne in @LGStudies on special district dissolution. We find limited evidence that dissolution is creation in reverse (TELs on cities ↓ exits; home rule ↑ exits), but the results are extremely fragile.

🚨New paper forthcoming in Local Government Studies with @leland_suzanne🚨 tl;dr granting cities more powers generally leads to fewer special districts, as their need to circumvent restrictive state laws is lessened. These results disappear in district subgroup analyses.

Special district dissolution methods are often difficult to parse. This one no longer provides any services, but the referendum to dissolve it failed (so it exists as a taxing body doing nothing). Now, the legislature steps in.

Hi @evernote, can I request a simple feature? Can we have a quote text format, preferably one that is respected from an import of, say, a markdown file? That would be swell. Thanks!
