We were alerted to an appalling rental property listed by 360 Residential in Belfast yesterday so we sent them a letter demanding it be removed.
This is where Belfast is headed. Landlords only seek to line their pockets. They'll put a shower in your bedroom & charge you for damp
On Friday we accompanied our member, 83 year old Rosetta, to the Housing Executive and refused to leave until they conducted essential maintainance/repairs that Rosetta had been waiting over 5 months for. ⌛ 1/3
Today a 19 year old was due to be evicted from his home in East Belfast after a 4 week notice.
After entering into negotiations with our union yesterday, the landlord has agreed to our demand to postpone today's eviction by 3 months. (1/3)
Proud to stand in solidarity with survivors of Grenfell tonight. Really positive engagement from fans with many agreeing

Over 400 leaflets distributed and plenty of conversations with the fans.
Stand Up For the 72. Kick Out Kingspan.
Four days after emailing Boyle Properties, we still hadn't received a response. This morning, members of CATU Belfast hand-delivered a letter to his door so that he couldn't ignore us. This is what he had to say:
A number of days ago,
@HustonEA
listed what appeared to be a kitchen with a bed and a settee squeezed into it as a "studio apartment" for £300 p/m.
We will not allow Belfast to be turned into a mirror image of Dublin by greedy slumlords. This letter will be delivered tomorrow.
Yesterday, we doorstepped 360 Residential estate agents in South Belfast in support of our member Máire.
We are demanding the landlord teminate Máire's tenancy immediately. The landlord has until 4th May to respond.
Looks like Boyle rang the PSNI on peaceful protestors... Day four and the cops paid us a visit.
Since Monday we’ve been silently picketing Boyle Properties. 3 members attending, masked up & socially distant on a public street
Our demand remains. Declan Boyle: Drop the Charges
Yesterday CATU Belfast wrote to Boyle Properties regarding a members deposit. When we advised our member to contact one of the three protection schemes, they were told their deposit was not protected. We raised this issue with Boyle.
Solidarity with the families and communities affected by the Grenfell Disaster.
Kingspan provided insulation for Grenfell and hid the fire safety risks for over a decade. We visited the
@UlsterRugby
Kingspan Stadium to send solidarity to those in London tonight
@GrenfellUnited
Declan Boyle knows the value of being organised. As the former chair of the Landlords Association Northern Ireland, Declan has fought for the collective rights of landlords to keep bleeding money out of tenants.
Now it’s our turn. Boyle: drop the charges.
Tomorrow our members will be protesting the sponsorship of Ulster Rugby by Kingspan, a company which bears huge responsibility for the Grenfell Tower tragedy.
#KickOutKingspan
Sinn Féin’s director of finance – a member of the party’s ard comhairle – illegally converted an office into a “wholly substandard” apartment with no ventilation nor privacy.
His tenant still lives there.
This is just one of his 10 rental properties.
We are dismayed, but not at all shocked, by the extreme rent profiteering of landlords in Belfast who pray on students to the tune of £1.8 billion a year. Students here live in some of the most unfit, overcrowded housing conditions on these islands and for this are exploited.
After refusing to engage with our union by 4th May, CATU Belfast has now begun a campaign against 360 Residential.
Our member's landlord, Martin King, and his associates have been given ample time to resolve this issue, but have refused to do so.
Watch this space.
IRELAND IS NOT "FULL"🔔
There are 166,000 vacant homes in Ireland🏘🏘
There are 16,181 homes listed on AirBnB🏡💰
We need to stand together to fight for affordable and secure homes for everyone 🟢
Refugees are welcome here.
Everyone has a right to seek safety in our city. We organise all tenants and we will fight for every person who calls Belfast home.
No room for racists. No room for Britain First.
Declan Boyle is seemingly charging former tenants (and CATU Belfast members) arbitrary sums of money after they left a property in 2019. They are still receiving emails as of this week.
Following on from our action on Saturday, we will be meeting again outside Kingspan Stadium at 6pm to stand with the survivors of Grenfell and engage fans over the continued ties between
@UlsterRugby
and their principal sponsor
@KingspanIns_UK
All welcome

🚨 Today's Eviction Resisted ✊
Our member will be staying put tonight. We will be back out again tomorrow from 9am.
Until our member has confirmed alternative accomodation in Belfast we will resist any attempt at eviction.
Eleventh day outside Boyle Properties. Only one member in attendance. No gathering, no COVID breaches, yet still PSNI paid the picket a visit. Even though no offence was committed, officers attempted again to get details off our member.
Our online picket of Boyle Properties has commenced. The days of Belfast landlords acting with impunity are over. We plan to flood Declan's inbox with emails to this effect.
If you want to get involved, let us know and we'll provide you with details of how to join the picket.
In January 2023, CATU Belfast began a campaign in the Ardoyne area surrounding the appalling level of damp and mould in Housing Executive homes and WE WON. 👇 1/5
2 of our activists just hand delivered this letter to the very courteous manager at
@HustonEA
. We told him that, despite his attempt to blame the landlord for this happening, we’d be holding Douglas Huston responsible if it happens again and they’ll have protests at their door.

another day, another picket. Members were paid two visits by PSNI. Initially under the auspices of 'mediating' between us and Boyle Properties. Following 30 mins in Boyle's office, officers returned and threatened to arrest our socially-distant members for 'breaching COVID regs'
Yesterday, on the tenth day of our picket outside Boyle Properties, we received another visit from PSNI. This time we were offered the opportunity to go into mediation with Boyle as, from the PSNI’s point of view, this problem wasn’t going anywhere.
Holylands residents are fed up with the bullying behaviour of Boyle Properties. The days of landlords treating any area in our city as their personal fiefdom are numbered...
Tenants, mortgage holders, renters: unionise and fight against the landlord class.
Happy Valentines Day from CATU Belfast!

DROP THE CHARGES!
Boyle would rather speak to the cops, than his tenants.
Day four picketing Boyle Properties. Our demand has not changed. We demand Boyle drops the charges against our member.
Keeping up the pressure on Boyle Properties.
Spoke to a number of passers by today, and if there’s one thing we can all agree on it’s that Boyle has got away with too much for too long.
Drop the charges against our member! ✊

It is a stain on Belfast that Kingspan continues to sponsor the

CATU Belfast members were in town today to stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ protest group. These young people have gathered regularly to counteract the hate speech of preachers in our city centre
✊ Solidarity forever! ✊
One of our members has been served an eviction for tomorrow. We have contacted the landlord in the attached email.
Our demands are simple: provide our member with an extension of 3 months to allow him to obtain suitable alternative accomodation.
Following on from our interactions with the PSNI outside Boyle Properties, our members reached out to Phoenix Law to help us with our next steps.
This is the letter Phoenix Law have sent to PSNI on our behalf:
“She paid off, for me, two and a half houses.”
This is the reality of the private rental sector. We can’t afford to buy because we’re paying off landlords mortgages.
Back at it again today. Please call Boyle Properties and demand they drop the charges.

Our members will be on the picket again this morning. Give us a beep if you drive past.
Looks like Boyle rang the PSNI on peaceful protestors... Day four and the cops paid us a visit.

Our demand remains. Declan Boyle: Drop the Charges
Our 83 year old member has been waiting since May to have a modern handrail fitted by NIHE. Unable to get upstairs other than by crawling, she is often forced to sleep on her sofa.
CATU has demanded that this, and other vital repairs to her leaking roof, be made immediately.
This email is just away to the following letting agents.
• Natalie Clarke
• Bennett Estate Agents
• Pinpoint
• Gerry O’Connor (GOC) Estate Agents
Tick tock, tick tock.
EVICTION POSTPONED!🟢
We can finally announce that our phone/email picket against Northern Property
@propertyni
was a success.✊
Northern Property have ceded to our demands and confirmed that our member Petesy will be allowed to stay in his apartment until after Christmas. 1/4
CATU Belfast had a good day on the doors in the Ardoyne area today.
We are consistently hearing about shocking problems with mould and damp in the area and we are collecting signatures for a petition to bring these problems to the Housing Executive over the coming weeks.
Magell Limited has revealed its new flexible workspace, located in Belfast’s Eagle Star House, which will redefine workspace in the city when it opens its doors next summer:
#UrbanHQ
#RedefiningWorkspace
There's Writers Square being replaced with every single office block you have ever seen in the last five years lads
(Also, why is this drawing implying they're paving over the actual road?)
Once again Boyle Properties have chosen to ring the PSNI rather than talk to a union.
Appreciate the solidarity from
@angalgreine
and
@QUBSU
over the past few days. We will keep picketing until Boyle Properties drops the unnecessary charges against their former tenants.
After visiting Rosetta yesterday morning we can confirm this work has begun and Rosetta is over the moon with finally having these problems resolved. ✅

Thank you to all who have taken part in the Online/Telephone Picket so far ✊

Great to be down supporting the HUGE
@unisontheunion
picket at the Royal Hospital today. Solidarity with all healthcare workers defending their pay and conditions.
As many have pointed out - this is the fault of the land-barons who own nearly all the HMOs in the Holylands
When one such landlord sat on city council, they got permission for HMOs exceeding the max. for the area & now rents them out
Angry? Join CATU
CATU South Belfast is out at Queen’s Freshers today. Pop on down and chat to them about getting organised
Together we can organise and take on the landlords - slumlords and overpriced student accommodation alike!
🔔EVICTION RESISTANCE NEEDED🔔
We will be resisting two more evictions in our city this week and we need the support of all members of the community to protect these families from being thrown onto the street without alternative accommodation.

Over the next few days, this account will be rebranded as the new Twitter home of CATU's newest Branch; Belfast Community Action Tenants Union
Last night we elected our new Committee and decided on a plan of action for the next few months. Come join us.
Starting this Saturday 22 January 2022 at 4.30pm we will be in attendance outside all Ulster Rugby home games to encourage Ulster Rugby to sever all ties with Kingspan. While any home in Northern Ireland is unsafe due to combustible cladding, this sponsorship is an insult.
We've started an online picket of Boyle Properties. As our first step, we've been flooding Declan's inbox with emails to this effect.

Hastily made flags and Conal's wee motor out repping Belfast's organised tenants the day ✊🚩
we've had an overwhelming response to our actions re Declan Boyle, and many people want to know what they can do to help.
We're a tenants union. Our members are from all across Belfast. Join CATU today - there's power in a union.
If you pay the bills, you are entitled to the energy voucher - NOT your landlord.
This scheme is designed to help those in need, not as another way for landlords to enrich themselves at our expense.

All quiet at the moment and have a good crowd thanks to our members and the local community

Our campaign to tackle mould/repairs in the Ardoyne area continues. These problems can no longer be ignored.
Join our union and let's bring the fight to these landlords and the Housing Executive.
Our notice to 4 letting agencies that we intend to take action if they do not publicly commit to not charging illegal fees. Those agencies are;
Ulster Property Sales
TMC Letting Agents
McGranaghans
Northern Property
If they don’t commit by 01/09/19, protest action will commence
Following yesterday's extensive phone and email picket, Martin King has agreed to meet with us. This is just a first step, but it wouldn't have been possible without the actions of our members and supporters.
Updates on the case will follow later today.
Well done to our fantastic member Rosetta on finally getting the maintenance she deserves!☀
Rosetta you fought so hard for this and we were so happy to support you!✊

The war on illegal fees escalates. TMC ignored our emails and letters. We served them notice today of our intention to protest. Date and time to be announced in due course.
