Actual exchange in my triage room at work yesterday:
small child [quietly, to mum]: "is it a boy or a girl?"
me [having somehow never had this before]: "uh, neither"
small child [wide eyed, excited]: "A THEY!"
"How can two teenagers be driven to this much hatred?"
We get it, you weren't visibly queer as a teenager so never had to face this first-hand.
I was chased across my sleepy well-off hometown when I was 15. He had a knife. This happens everywhere, all the time.
🙃 I am glad this resonates but if your gut instinct is to reply "I'll take things that didn't happen for..." I just want you to know that you will be the, at time of writing, fifth person to type that out.
Get another joke. And meet kids (although maybe don't}
If you want to know how cursed British polite greetings are, I once asked a man who had JUST UNDERGONE A VF ARREST AND ONE ROUND OF CPR AND STILL HAD THE MASSIVE DOSE OF ADRENALINE COURSING THROUGH HIS VEINS "how are you doing, (name)?" and he said
"alright thanks, mate"
Every single queer or trans person has seen that look in the eyes of a passer-by turning round for a second glance.
That "I wish I could remove you from the world" look.
I'm starting to believe there's a genuine possibility that these people will try to end Gillick competence in some form over the next few years. It would be a disaster for child safeguarding.
Trans people warned you - this doesn't stop at us.
This letter was sent to a 12 year-old boy by his GP. His mother is not happy. I don't blame her. She'll be discussing it with me on today's Richie Allen Show. I'm live at 4. Speak then.
This isn't new, but it is getting worse.
In a moment of cosmic irony, I got away by running into a clothes shop and locking myself in what turned out to be the female changing rooms.
Torn between wanting the now dozens of identical replies to meet children (this is what they are like, all the time, about everything) and also wanting y'all right-wing weirdos to STAY AWAY FROM CHILDREN
@ScottCJonesy
Hi Scott, we're aware that some people view the word as a slur, however, the term 'queer' has largely been reclaimed as a self-affirming and inclusive umbrella term for the diverse LGBTQ+ communities today. Our direction is to create an inclusive space for the whole community ❤
I feel like approximately half of the world's dysphoria would disappear overnight if North Americans would just stop insisting on calling everyone "sir* or "ma'am" in literally any context
Muting this now on account of how my mentions have been flooded with replies and QTs detailing the physical violence and torture that my siblings have endured.
Thank you for sharing, but I can't read any more.
Anyone who has worked with child safeguarding in any capacity will know the horrifying truth that I suspect Miriam also knows (but ignores when helpful):
Parents are also the best placed to exploit and harm their children.
Parents are the best protectors of their children. Exposing children to sexualised material & keeping it secret from parents is a safeguarding risk.
My piece in
@Telegraph
today on why we need a legal right for parents to view sex education materials👇
@Canellelabelle
Not sure what's worse: blaming childhood sexual abuse on childrens' fashion choices or ignoring the fact that there is an actual nonce in this photo??? And the dress has clearly not repelled him like a force field???
Four days apart.
Not to state the obvious but if you are averse to the vaccine because of how seemingly little it was tested on humans against covid, I have some terrible news about Ivermectin :)
@thhamilton
@postoctobrist
Huge props to this banger of a proposed community note from someone which will never be approved but deserves to see the light of day
HELLO FELLOW TRANS, I NEED HELP.
Here's the deal: I work at a hospital. We look after trans people sometimes. We're not great at it. Respecting pronouns is cool but it ain't gonna save lives.
I'm working on a tool for patient-facing staff and I need your help.
Just booked my cat in for an orchiectomy. One month wait, no psychiatrist letter required, no frantic call from my mum asking if I'm sure I want to cut his balls off.
Why is it better for cats than trans people???
Trans people aren't allowed to dose our own hormones unless we manipulate the system or go it alone.
Diabetics are often allowed, even encouraged, to dose their own insulin.
Insulin can kill you instantly. Hormone replacement can't.
The difference is institutional transphobia.
It is truly incredible how low the regret rate for gender affirming surgery is. It's orders of magnitude lower than joint replacements.
There's only one solution: mandatory two years of real life experience having a good knee, and two letters from specialist knee psychiatrists.
New study on gender affirming care regret just dropped, and the numbers are staggering in showing how little regret there is. This one has 6 out of 1989 patients detransitioning.
I work with teenagers. We assess and act on Gillick competence daily. It's an essential safeguard when it comes to disabling controlling and abusive parents or guardians.
You do not own your child.
@Keir_Starmer
is a danger to children.
'We all know what it's like with teenage children and I feel very strongly about this...this argument that children can make decisions without the consent of parents is one I just don't agree with at all'
I want to explain this paper in easier to understand terms (since people in the replies are confused):
What?
They looked for three hormone receptors that prostate cells have. They found two receptors in all subjects, and the third receptor in the majority.
🧵 1/5...
Today I learned that testosterone activates genes to grow prostate tissue. In one 2022 study, 100% of transmasculine subjects had prostate tissue after 1.4-12.1 years of testosterone therapy.
My favourite thing about the online transphobe "WEIRD MEN CAN JUST PRETEND TO BE WOMEN TO ACCESS THEIR SPACES" argument is that every time, without fail, the only weird men doing that are online transphobes.
This is actually 100% true. Also people with ADHD have a secret, much longer finger that can be used to tap on tree bark and drill insects out of the wood to eat. And they can't look directly at the moon.
I recently found out that people living with ADHD do not miss people.
For them, it is "out of sight, out of mind" .
If you are not physically there, you don't "exist".
This has really messed up a lot of relationships..
Thousands of trans people on HRT in the UK are at risk, and nobody is talking about or even aware of it.
A small minority in our political and media class are controlling the narrative.
Trans people need allies who are willing to listen and act on this.
So my girlfriend, who transitioned 18 years ago and was discharged from specialist services, has just had a phone call from her GP telling her that due to changing government policy, she will no longer be prescribed HRT as she's not currently being seen by a GIC.
Absolutely not. The whole point of free at point of use healthcare is that everyone gets it, always.
Lots of people need treatment because of conscious decisions they made. All of them are entitled to it.
It's trans day of remembrance. There are a lot of statistics floating about. "41%" is used just as often as a weapon as it to inform.
It's worth remembering that 41% of trans young people attempt suicide, though. It's one of the few concrete statistics we have. 🧵
Just been followed by this account. You should know that it is either a scam, or a strategy to get parents to out their trans children to people you should definitely not out them to.
"finasteride/blockers won't bring back androgenic alopecia" that clearly untrue belief lost me my hair permanently.
"Trans fem periods don't exist" okay but they do
"Progesterone gives no real mood/developmental/cardiovascular/sleep benefits" yes but it does
The NHS service with the longest 18-week referral breach (measured in years, not months) is trying some, let's say, 'novel' methods to smoothen their shocking backlog statistics.
Don't let them get away with it.
Unpopular opinion maybe but I really enjoy being trans and think trans people are cool and neat.
I think people who don't like us are bad and wrong. There, I said it.
This is a fantastic photo, artistically speaking. Look at that framing and composure. The sense of movement. Whoever took this in a split second needs to be showered with praise.
Pals can we maybe rein it in with the hair loss insults in every single set of replies on this terrible website?
You're mildly inconveniencing some awful men whilst pouring petrol on what is for many trans people a dysphoria fire. Obviously.
Not QTing because don't wanna draw undue attention... But I just saw this from a mutual and, uh, if you think like this you need to stop.
Non binary isn't diet trans. Sort yourself out.
Trans masc health is generally a bit better but only as a biproduct of research bias into androgens.
There's no research here because of the same biases that have always dogged human biology research- if you're not a cis man, there are fewer studies on people like you
@TouchMyTeapot
Okay so I followed this guy's advice and now my apartment is in bokeh???? Nothing has an edge, I can't touch anything, and anything I put down on a surface just kind of fizzles out of tangible existence???????
Most parents are categorically *not* child abusers. But most child abusers are parents, guardians, or other close relatives.
There are plenty of instances where children can and should be taught things that their caregivers don't personally approve of.
Children aren't property.
That girl had her whole life ahead of her. She deserved better.
That kind of hatred doesn't come out of nowhere. Those complicit know who they are, and they're proud of it.
One, who I'm not gonna name, is more interested in the endo *casues* of being trans rather than how to actually look after the endocrinological needs of people who *are* trans. That's totally backwards. All that clout and knowledge wasted.
Lincoln local elections 2024 🗳️ Meet Esther Knight from the Party of Women — She is hoping to claim the Minster ward seat under the newly-established party
If I had any patience at all I would sit and wait to screenshot at 1984 likes. Just know that I would. I'm not gonna, but you can imagine it if you like
Oh great, my genitals are once again actually blowing up.
Uhhhhh, remember to get that bussy vaccinated as soon as you're offered your six month booster, kids!
@Falvey_Dan
@markarby
Hi Dan, can I reupload everything GB News has ever broadcast but replace the audio with wet fart noises and donate all of the ad revenue to just stop oil, mermaids, and jeremy corbyn? With credit of course.
Don't worry if you say no, I'll just not credit you and use it anyway.
Like I'm sorry if you liked it as a kid and it still brings you joy but even in that case just buy them from a charity shop??? At least then your money is going to a good cause. Every single charity shop in Britain is at least 40% Harry Potter by weight.
Eighteen months ago I put out a call on twitter for first-hand healthcare stories from trans people. Here's what I've been working on since then:
We Need To Talk About Trans Healthcare Inequality is a new training series aimed at UK healthcare practitioners. 🧵👇
But if the research doesn't exist, gender specialists have a duty to either do it themselves or back institutions that will. A lot of this could be self-reported. But if you look at, say, the UK's most senior specialists, their research is into the most irrelevant crap.
The part that really makes me angry is that we have been crying out for large-scale longitudinal studies on blockers, HRT, and adjuncts (like progesterone) for years.
Plenty of trans people would agree to take part. Most, even.
This is weaponised research.
@estrozeneca
My favourite way to obscure my transness when people ask about my hair or voice is to tell them I had ✨hormonal issues✨ until I was nineteen.
Not a lie 🤷♀️
You know what's wild? UK GPs are advised to consider bridging prescriptions if a trans person has started HRT themselves. But if it's been started by a fellow (private) medical professional, they aren't subject to the same advice and often seem to be advised against it.
The difficulty is that we as healthcare professionals are indoctrinated into evidence-based practice. This is a good thing. But what about when the evidence doesn't exist? Or is only anecdotal and not subject to all the controls and selection criteria etc that proper studies are?
This opinion isn't anywhere near as spicy as it sounds: if you don't want children to receive any form of sex education, it's because you are either 1) a perpetrator of childhood sexual abuse or 2) support perpetrators of childhood sexual abuse.
There is no other valid reason.
@JournalistHelen
Hello helen this is my son who identifies as a panda. We are at our wits end trying to make him eat normal food, but all he does is scream to go out in the garden to eat bamboo.
We tried getting rid of the bamboo but it's very hardy and keeps growing.
Please help us!!! 🙏
