JUST IN: Cassidy Hutchinson, an aide to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, is expected to testify publicly Tuesday at the House January 6 committee hearing, sources tell CNN
“Had the Vice President of the United States obeyed the President of the United States, America would immediately have been plunged into what would have been tantamount to a revolution within a paralyzing constitutional crisis.” - Luttig
“For all the disagreement we have in our Congress on some issues, there is significant agreement on support for Ukraine…It’s not just about freedom in Ukraine…It’s about freedom of democracy at large”-

“The law is clear," the appeals court wrote. "We cannot write a rule that allows any subject of a search warrant to block government investigations after the execution of the warrant. Nor can we write a rule that allows only former presidents to do so."”
Taking a moment to be grateful for the intelligent, knowledgeable, experienced, and most of all competent leadership teams in the Biden administration leading the effort to manage this international crisis at State, DoD, NSC, IC and all across the USG
There’s a lot of important national security lawyering going on right now, and in such times, hard decision making & accountability matter. As best as I can tell there is no Senate confirmed Legal Advisor at State or GC at Air Force, no nominee for CIA GC, & an Acting GC at NSA…
Judge Luttig provides an essential public service by focusing in his closing remarks on the “clear and present danger to American democracy” that continues to exist, today and into the future
Having unfettered access to 400 million guns isn’t freedom. Being able to take your kid to a Fourth of July parade without getting slaughtered is freedom.

: "Nikki Haley has a chance to go down swinging and to be a legend and burn the boats. And I want to see that from her because the party is not going to have her back....So it's time for her to go hard. And I love seeing that she's starting to do it."
It continues to amaze, that all this was going on behind the scenes, so many people at the WH, in the agencies, knew, and it seems that no one spoke up, spoke out, warned Congress, warned the country.
I would be interested in reading an article that asks and receives responses from every single member of Congress who is boldly expressing support for Ukraine today and voted against the first impeachment whether they regret their vote and see differently now what was at stake.
Judge Luttig's statement is remarkable for how raw it is. It's not a legal memo, or even a prepared speech of the sort we might expect from a retired federal judge. It's a cry for the country he served and is afraid of losing. Some excerpts:
We have a domestic terrorism problem in this country. National/homeland security leaders know it and say it. But policymakers & institutions are not treating it with the same energy, attention & resources that we devoted to the international terrorism threat of the early 2000s.
Among those joining President Biden in calling for an assault weapon ban: National police leaders, who say such weapons pose a grave risk to their officers and the public
I don’t think ratcheting up political pressure on the Justice Department is going to be well received by Departmental leadership intent on restoring independence & ensuring prosecutorial decisions are apolitical. If anything, pressure will have opposite of its intended effect.

I understand
@January6thCmte
wants to focus on Trump, but at what point will they reckon w/ the lack of preparation & response from the vast federal law enforcement presence in Washington? USG natsec/LE institutions don’t need a personal phone call from the president to act…
Hamas’s savage attack on Israel on October 7 has pulled the world’s attention back to the menace of international terrorism. It’s time to dust off the counterterrorism playbook. A few thoughts, via
@BulwarkOnline
Just two years ago, the political leadership of the US was so dysfunctional that despite a complex global national security threat landscape, the annual worldwide threat briefings were scrapped. This week, intelligence leaders will appear before both oversight committees…
The
@January6thCmte
has a tall task as hearings begin this week: tell the story of the political strategy to undo the election of 2020, and connect that strategy to the violence that accompanied it. My conversation w/
@FWhitfield
@CNNnewsroom
this weekend
The issue is…Putin invaded a sovereign nation…is trying to destroy a democracy….and is mass murdering civilians. That’s the issue. That’s the headline. That’s the focus every day until he ceases his barbaric attack.
It would be good if tomorrow there were a thoughtful, accurate public briefing from a knowledgeable high ranking senior official who can put these developments in context, explain what they are & articulate what new decision making process has been implemented to eliminate them..
The Russian invasion of Ukraine is grotesque, if not unexpected. At a human level, the unnecessary lives lost and uncertainty for an entire society and its government are painful to watch from a distance…
…not a comment at all on the quality or competency of the individuals filling those roles as Actings. But formal authority - and where required Senate confirmation - matter. Especially in times of national security urgency.

I lean towards doing this. The factual basis is there. The Russian government has staked out its place in the world for many, many years to come among the most heinous regimes. It belongs on this list of global pariahs.
As Putin wages a horrific war, commits war crimes against the people of Ukraine, and supports terrorist groups, we urge the

The
@January6thCmte
has obviously uncovered substantial details about who was involved in supporting and inspiring the movement that led to the attack on the Capitol. Why not present these facts through formal testimony and create an official record via public hearings?
@BradMossEsq
Right! And I have made this point repeatedly over the years in the context of criticisms of the FISA process/court: degradation of FISA authorities will not mean the surveillances will not occur; it means they will occur without a legal framework and without court oversight.
Thank you so much for this thread, Mr. Hagan,
@joehagansays
. You almost presciently understood precisely what I was at least attempting to do to the best of my abilities during the hearing Thursday.
These school board members have an extremely difficult task. But there’s a place for politeness, until there’s not. When a member of the public threatens gun violence the answer needs to be, “step away, we’ll be notifying law enforcement officials, now.”
🚨PAGE CTY: A parent appears to threaten the school board w/gun violence if they don’t drop the mask mandate. “My children will NOT come to school on Monday w/a mask on, that’s not happening. I will bring every single GUN LOADED…”
She ends by saying, “I’LL SEE YALL ON MONDAY.”
….there is nothing about this series of violent crime that is partisan. The Metropolitan Police Department is under staffed, downtown is losing businesses and commercial tenants, and aside from a new DOJ initiative, not much seems to be getting done….
The question really isn’t whether the RNC was going to censure Cheney & Kinzinger. The important question is why they - or anyone else in public life who acknowledges 1/6/21 was not “legitimate political discourse” - would choose to continue to associate themselves w/the RNC/GOP.
According to news reports, the victim of this attack, Mike Gill, died over the weekend of his injuries from a carjacking spree in downtown DC. Another young man, victim Alberto Vasquez Jr., also died in the same series of attacks…
Breaking news: US tells Russian mission to the UN that 12 of its diplomats are "persona non grata" and must leave the US by March 7th, announced Russian ambassador just now during a press conference.
…Mr. Gill had served in the Trump administration, which has brought this attack more attention. But the point is, he was attacked and shot in a main area of downtown DC, blocks from the White House, at 6pm on a Monday….
The international community is rightfully firing on all cylinders including defense support, economic consequences, diplomatic engagement, humanitarian assistance & the latest, rule of law accountability 👇

…maybe it will be in the final report, perhaps it will be the subject of a future high-profile hearing, but at some point, there needs to be some accountability for the failure to warn, prepare, defend lawmakers and staff, and backup the MPD & Capitol Police.

ICYMI - I argue that the Biden administration’s aggressive release of intelligence may not have prevented the Russian invasion, but it certainly changed the global information environment for the better, via
@CNNOpinion
As he should be. The administration has done an admirable job of purposefully declassifying intelligence in near real time to inform the world about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. These latest revelations didn’t look like that.
Biden was “livid” about recent Ukraine leaks,
@tomfriedman
reports. Per Friedman, he called the CIA director, defense secretary, and director of national intel to “make clear in the strongest and most colorful language” that they must stop.
Have many thoughts today, about direction nation is headed, the role of law in our country & the degradation of women in our society. But for now, I’ll note that despite its purported deference to “history & traditions” the majority discounted the last 50 yrs of American history.

Sincerely hope the administration & international partners are prepared for what actions they will take against Russia when humanitarian & media access is gained to Mariupol. Truly hope I’m wrong, but am not sure the world is prepared for the horrors that may be revealed there.
It is indeed a big deal to defeat a GLOMAR response, and
@JasonLeopold
has shown once again that persistent use of the FOIA statute can produce meaningful results, in this case what appears to be confirmation by the USG that no declassification order exists 👇

Surprise! Now the agencies have officially confirmed to us they have no record of Trump's standing order

Another day, another rattling disclosure about law enforcement response to Uvalde massacre. As many as 13 state troopers were in the hallway at Robb Elementary, yet DPS did not override school police chief's decision to wait ... and wait.
In general (except for tight community of expert defense analysts) I would like to see the public discussion of the war in
#Ukraine
less focused on tactical military strategy & weapons and more focused on the intense daily diplomacy by US & international partners to stop the war.
If true, this wouldn’t be the first time a federal government agency has a data deletion mishap. But there’s still plenty of unanswered questions, and USSS, like much of DHS, is in need of some major oversight & accountability.
