Early mortality in metastatic lung cancer: using SEER. One third of patients die within 2 months. In all our excitement about the “tail of the curve” it’s important we don’t forget about the many who don’t benefit. These patients don’t have advocates.

"We tend to place our doctors, especially when they are specialists, on pedestals, yet they, like any other professional, cannot know everything pertaining to every case they encounter."

“If you have lungs, you can get lung cancer,” patient advocate Karen Loss reminds everyone. “People don’t realize that anyone can get lung cancer. We have a terrible smoker’s stigma. You smoked, you did it to yourself.” https://t.co/yjMnu37QOJ

Welcome Eric; #lungcancer screening false positive rate in clinical practice 7-8%; 80% of lung cancers found early stage; 90%+ five year survival, 3% overdiagnosis; 40% mortality reduction with 10 years screening - w/o screening only 16% five yr survival #lcsm 433 deaths per day
@EricTopol @nytDeniseGrady @NYTScience @LancetRespirMed Low dose CT screening for lung cancer has been validated by multiple large clinical trials. It was given a passing grade by the USPSTF. The referenced study was not a test to validate lung cancer screening but to see if a computer can interpret these exams.
