With preoperative depression established as a risk factor for postoperative delirium (amongst other adverse outcomes), there is a growing impetus for assessing the utility of incorporating routine psychologic screening and psychologic interventions into the perioperative period!

Postoperative delirium is a major complication which can be highly distressing for patients (and their family and care team) and also associated with other complications, new disability, increased hospital length of stay and healthcare utilization, and even mortality.

29% of patients with a pre-existing diagnosis of depression or active depressive symptoms before surgery experienced postoperative delirium, compared to only 15% of patients without a depression diagnosis/symptoms (RR 1.91, 95% 1.68-2.17).

This is ignored far too much for my liking. We easily forget this is the most stressful day of a patient’s life. Respectful silence counts for a lot.

It has become routine to do a systematic review before committing to a RCT. We should do the same for prediction models. Please use the wheel.

This will go down in history as one of science and medical research's greatest achievements. Perhaps the most impressive. I put together a preliminary timeline of some key milestones to show how several years of work were compressed into months.

"Take a deep breath, you're okay." Something we say to every single patient as they wake up from anesthesia. Hilarious that we sometimes forget to offer the same to ourselves.

I've reviewed my share of medicolegal cases, mostly about drugs. If I could share one piece of prescribing advice it would be this: When opioids aren't working, simply giving more opioids probably isn't the answer.

“There is simply no way that our lives will resume as if this had never happened. And so, while it may feel good in the moment, it is foolish to dive into a frenzy of activity or obsess about your productivity right now. That is denial and delusion.” https://t.co/Sa88MsuocV

#SearchForPPE Our hospitals are projected to run short of PPE in coming months of fighting #COVID19. Community practitioners and local businesses have begun donating spare PPE. There are surely some goldmines of spare PPE out there. https://t.co/6G0NlvuUsG /2
