FEATURE: When scientific fraud occurs in the lab, many consequences follow. Some are professional—retractions, rescinded grants—whereas others are deeply personal. Our investigation explores what happens to the people left behind. By @callimcflurry

My story unspools the history of US scientists who studied the Chilean rodent (including this groovy Vermonter), and highlights the detective work of the lab that cracked the inbreeding problem.

New funky animal story just dropped! 20 years ago, a lab in Chile reported that every degu develops Alzheimer's disease pathology when they age. But other labs couldn't find any plaques. Turns out the controversy was caused by decades of inbreeding.

But new genetic analyses and behavioral assays have made the Chilean degu a viable model again, researchers say.
