Ideally, you aren’t known for what you DON’T do - but the baseball community has valued poor methods (that need to die) for a long time…. At @BaseballSRSU, we don’t:. ❌ Focus on “mechanics”… at all.❌ Bunt… at all.❌ Use the tee… at all.❌ Prioritize opposite field hitting.

I would contend that those attributes are so generalizable as to be not necessary to focus on, period. And most likely even detrimental to do so. I believe research points strongly to this fact as well. But, I’m the crazy one on here - what do I know?? 🤷🏼‍♂️😂.

Rather than establishing a single ‘optimal’ model to work towards, we should instead be identifying the elements (attractors) within the technique that are generalizable and working towards creating conditions that often produce those elements.

Stop chasing “Optimal mechanics”…. This article is from 2007. 👇🏼. “We overview evidence, both theoretical & empirical, of inter-individual movement variability in seeking to achieve the same task goal, in contrast to the concept of “optimal” movement patterns….

Baseball guys get really offended at this concept, without even attempting to look into the research & evidence to support it. All while using the reasoning -. “this is how we’ve always done it”, or…. “this is how this famous player/coach did it”, or…. “this is how I did it”….

Isolated drills without the game’s perception–action coupling isn’t real training,it’s just rehearsel. True training happens under competitive &dynamic conditions where behaviors emerge as i/t game. In fact, training may be the wrong word, given how it’s often perceived &executed!.

“He now possesses multiple swings” 🔥🔥. Hitting is not exhaustively analyzing & perfecting swing “mechanics”….Just — stop doing this. It is accepting that we require a wide variety of PITCH SOLUTIONS (instead of an explicit set of prescribed technically-rehearsed “mechanics”).

Bryce Harper has a lot of adjustability in his swing. Nick Kurtz doesn't seem to have the same traits. What can we learn from both?. How many "clubs in the bag," as Harper put it, helps a hitter?. The latest from @Travis_Sawchik on the Driveline Blog:

I’ll add to this 👇🏼…. If they start playing games off of soft underhand front toss like what I gave to my 5-year-old nephew -> many hitters that work with private hitting guys on here would be hall of famers….

If we teach explicit swing “mechanics” that fit our preferred technique, then it makes it harder for these incredible athletic feats of adaptability to emerge. ❌ Stop focusing on “the swing.”. #killmechanics. #uglyswingsmattertoo. #trainontheedges

How does an offense create the most RUNS???. ✔️OPS, ✔️SLG, ✔️Isolated Power, ✔️OBP. *NOT* from Batting Average & getting Hits. -> Intelligently build offensive attack systems accordingly. 📊. -> And then tailor team training emphasis with those appropriate goals in mind.🏅.

It's probably time the correlations list got updated, so here we go! 10 years of MLB seasons (300 team-seasons of data), spanning 22,763 games and over 6.7 million pitches. This shows the relative impact that various stats have on a team's ability to score runs.

If this is a clear distinct factor with pitchers who control the stimulus of the pitcher/batter interaction…. Imagine how much MORE variability exists within & across hitters, responding to high unpredictability. It makes the seeking of “mechanics” checkpoints seem ridiculous.

For 150 years, baseball coaches have preached the importance of repeating mechanics; but this has changed recently as coaches learned the importance of variability. Until today, there has been no way to quantify variability in the throw. Here is how I quantified it 🧵⬇️.

There hasn’t been a more toxic, anxiety-inducing, POISONOUS word that has ubiquitously + negatively dominated baseball development conversation than this word: 👇🏼👇🏼. “Mechanics”. More players of all ages would have a better chance at success if usage of it ended. #killmechanics.

Working on “the swing” is for insecure coaches and insecure hitters. ❌ It promotes ego & anxiety. Working on hitting MANY different pitches, in ALL different zones, in hostile training environments…. ✅ Well, that is for FEARLESS & confident hitters who you don’t mess with!.

Just your friendly reminder that the most essential aspects to hitting precision are:. • Recognition.• Timing (multi-checkpoints). Also, a reminder that the object in the picture below👇🏼 does absolutely nothing to improve either of these things…👆🏼. Prioritize accordingly.
