The new initiative raised over $500k in 24 hours. Maya thinks viewers believe in her work because they watch her staff take care of the animals every day via livestream. "People like being philanthropic...with Alveus, they literally see where their money is going."

While remote education is their "bread & butter," the breeding center represents Alveus' next step. "We want to do things that are really tangible and quantifiable...contributing to wild populations and being able to release some endangered animals, then track them." —@mayahiga

Her blend of lifestyle streams and wildlife presenting—what she calls "Hiding the Broccoli"—is resonating with the Twitch generation. Maya and her team reach hundreds of millions of Gen Z viewers annually. One student told me she's studying animal sciences because of Maya.

Two years later, Maya announced her animal sanctuary, Alveus. Over a 21-hour stream, Maya raised >$500k to build Alveus—and shaved her heard following a promise to viewers. These days, Alveus is home to forty-plus animals and over a dozen staff members.

A trained wildlife presenter, Maya began educating Twitch viewers on conservation in 2019. She'd noticed during zoo internships that transporting animals for mobile events was a logistical nightmare. Therefore, why not educate young people remotely?
