Notice Kudlow’s comment. “The president loooooooves factories.” Even the president’s supporters make him sound like a big toddler that you can distract with shiny things.

It’s rather similar to Indonesia under Suharto. He made Chinese business owners an offer they couldn't refuse, they became “partners”.

Republicans for an economy entirely subject to the arbitrary rule of an autocratic ruler. Compared to this nightmare vision, even the bleak impoverished drudgery of socialism would feel like human freedom.

Another gift of the internet, this idea. Anyone with anti-sunscreen ideas on their social media timeline should be denied insurance coverage for skin cancer surgery later in life.

I'm never going out of business because a cult of deranged lunatics have convinced people that radiating the skin with sunlight is healthy for it and sunscreen is what really causes skin cancer. It's like being a well-paid janitor with never ending work to do because a cult of.

Yep this is pretty much it -- and so far it's worked, uniting Cambodians around the CPP government to a remarkable extent, and solidifying the power and prominence of the Thai military vis-a-vis its domestic political rivals (the Shinawatras).

We think America is rich. But growing up under constant surveillance, as American kids do, is an impoverished childhood leading to rickets of the soul. @LetGrowOrg is working to reverse this.

11/ So in sum, my assertion is, for those who care about liberalism, the environment, a safety net & the ec base to fund those, there are three choices: centrists (M. Bloomberg), the center-left (Pete Buttigieg) or the non-revolutionary progressive left, e.g. Elizabeth Warren.

10/ Because the democratic socialist left refuses to address the contradictions, I only hear it exposed from the Rothbard-Von Mises right, who have their own severe economic system delusions & myopia. Tankies/Stalinists of course don’t face this dilemma. That’s one resolution.

9/ And they are subjected to competition. I never see Jason Hickel or any other socialists address the fundamental conflict between liberalism and socialism which seems far more potent a threat than the center-left’s dilemmas over property rights & environmentalism.

8/ Israel’s labor-owned firms & farms of the 1950s-70s didn’t fail, they just became too small to matter. As for large state-owned firms, they can survive and thrive, but only if their management style resembles private firms, as in China or Taiwan in the Chiang Kai-shek era.

7/ W/out these armies of enforcers: (a) If starting from some initial high point [and how to get there?] the worker co-op or labor syndicate firm share of employment or GDP will shrink even if all firms economically successful. The % will keep shrinking till irrelevant.

6/ …the economic efficiency critiques of socialism are overblown. Hickelian socialism will require armies of police to enforce all sorts of bans on people contracting voluntarily. It will require prisons to hold the “black market” violators. It will require censorship.

5/ Will customers be free to reject the worker co-op’s products and buy privately if they prefer? Can a worker’s co-op sell their shares to managers if they want? . If one thinks through these problems, one can see that dem socialism faces a fundamental contradiction EVEN IF. .

4/ So the center-left must REALLY value rights of capital. To pass on the great deal on offer from the socialist left. My complaints: . 1st: The center-left is not forced to “open the door” to either, but only, the socialist left or the fascist right. False choice.

3/ Because, JH asserts, the right of capital is the highest center-left value that must never be compromised. If the center-left instead conceded to the socialist left, they could keep their liberalism & other nice things (welfare programs, environmentalism)! But they don’t.

2/ Hickel claims: Due to internal contradictions btw expressed values, the center-left is forced to “open the door” to either the socialist left or fascist right, & it regards the latter as the least worst option bc at least they will protect the right of capital accumulation.

liberalism is full of contradictions. the problem is that when competing values come into conflict, liberal leaders resolve the contradictions in favor of capital accumulation. this is why, time and time again, liberalism gives way to fascism. @jasonhickel on Better Future pod:
