Forced boredom (no screens or parent-organized entertainment) is like the bridge kids need to cross to get to the good stuff. The fun imagination stuff. The I-can’t-believe-they-came-up-with-that-on-their-own stuff. Few parents are able to stay strong while kids are on the.

The msg that parents SHOULD expose their kids early to foods like peanuts & eggs is not getting out fast enough. Waiting could actually trigger allergies, article explains. (And I'd say the same about independence: Kids NEED it to avoid anxiety) .

The anthropologist David Lancy says that once we invented school, adults started thinking: if school is where learning happens, then outside of school, learning does NOT happen. So we started to make THE ENTIRE DAY like school, & parents imitated classroom teachers. Discuss?

@FreeRangeKids Or they think they don't deserve freedom, because that is the message they are getting from adults including their parents. Or they think freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength, war is peace, etc., etc.

Anyone else seeing this: Kids only allowed to play in the backyard, not the front?. I assume the fear is that being visible, they'd be snatched?. But being visible, other kids might start playing, too. The collective action problem is solved when play becomes seen & normal.

@FreeRangeKids My two boys are allowed out on their own for hours. But I am one of a few. My 12 year has a 13 year old friend that can only play in his backyard and not his front. Most kids up here who do ride bikes do it with mom and dad on a bike trail on the weekends only.

Half as many kids are riding bikes as in the 90s. Of them, only 5% ride "frequently.". Seems suspiciously parallel to young people not get licenses. Yes, I know: Phones. But also, when you raise kids with NO FREEDOM, maybe they just give up.

Y’all, I wrote a book!. The Science of Second Chances is based on my decades of work studying crime and criminal behavior, first as an economics professor and now as a policy expert at Arnold Ventures. It shares what we know from cutting-edge research about how to intervene at.

Incredible article. Good breakdown showing non physical neglect absolutely dominating as government goons turned mandated reporters ruin families lives in the name of blankfaced valor. Need more states passing @FreeRangeKids laws like Utah.

Short, deep essay:. The Case for the Children's Room at the Library. While he knows his son will eventually have digital devices, at the library "'I can see him becoming a reader, not just a consumer of content. He is in control, not an algorithm.".
