What’s striking about CASINO is that it never stops moving. Scenes, music, voiceover bleeding together seamlessly, just a constant state of escalation. The decadence and rot piles up and piles up, then, “And that’s that.” Schoonmaker’s best work by a country mile.

What’s made THE CURSE linger, what makes it so valuable, is that it attempts to grapple with this contemporary disquieting rot and frustration, oftentimes fruitlessly. It’s awfully strident, but we could use some of that these days.

Eventually, the mysteries and machinations are sorted out and you see the pure evil underneath it all and it’s breathtaking. I’ve seen the movie countless times and I’m still immensely disturbed by this scene.
