Shining light on a carbon nitride thin film generates net charge. By adsorbing ionic surfactants, directs chemical gradients - measured with droplet manipulation. Now in @J_A_C_S: with @LukasZeininger , @PaoloGiusto, @MpiciPotsdam [1/3]

First day in the @MarelliLab at @MIT was a treat, complete with river view office - excited to get to work.

By shining a spot of ultraviolet light on the carbon nitride, we can direct adsorption of ionic surfactants. The generated chemical gradient is sufficient to generate Marangoni flows, and move the droplets. Have a look: [3/3].

Janus droplets characteristically reconfigure, move, and tilt in response to chemical concentration changes, or chemical/thermal gradients. We use them to measure molecule adsorption, desorption, molecule charge selectivity, gradient type, and direction. [2/3].

11:35 - have an idea, .11:37 - open "tailored double emulsions made simple".11:41 - find supporting information.11:42 - make solutions.11:49 - first try, perfect double emulsions.a bit of soft matter magic, thanks @_Wang_JW_ @VogelLab.

We also show a synthesis-free approach to capture as much light as we can at the optical interface. By adding an extra dye we improve the signal-to-noise ratio using an emission cascade. The shape of the droplet then directs this totally internally reflected light. 3/4.

Microfluidics is not required. You can collect, or direct this totally internally reflect light based on morphology alone, which is immediately ready for microscope-free readout of changing chemistry. 2/4.

A droplet can direct light sideways, and we made a spinning microscope to observe it. A nice collaboration with Sara Nagelberg and Mathias Kolle at @MITMechE, @baryzewska, Pablo Simon-Marques, and @LukasZeininger @MpiciPotsdam. This paper is fun (for me), robust, and simple: 1/4.

Excited to see our most recent research published. We studied how fluorescent Janus colloids can manipulate the pathway of light, laying some groundwork for their future applications in sensors, data storage, and smart displays.
