Millions of villi work to sense their local environment and indirectly talk to the brain. Two-way communication is done via the enteric nervous system — a vast network of neurons and glia that regulate, motility, fluid exchange, and tell your brain what’s for breakfast. Pics mine

NEW insights into the sense of smell. @YuLab19 research published in @eLife reveals vast range of cell types in a part of the nose that gives some animals scent-detecting “superpowers” w/ potential to expand understanding of sensory processing in humans.

This #MicroscopyMonday is the mouse intestine. Specifically villi, which serve to increase surface area for nutrient absorption. Within each villus, there are nerves & glia (shown in red & green) that send sensory information back to the #brain. 🧠 @braingutaxis (@YuLab19)
