Nearly two years into the deluge of articles proclaiming the pandemic has pushed working moms to the brink, I have one to add to the mix, based on my research and my life, out in @HarvardBiz: stop telling working moms they just need a 50-50 partner. .🧵.

I have moved over to bluesky. This platform stopped being a place to post about inequality and gender long ago, but I have missed the virtual community I had once really appreciated here. I hope to see many of you on bluesky. You can find me there as drbobbithomason. 🤟.

A beautiful reminder that our research holds the potential to change not only the understandings and actions of others, but also ourselves.

Breaking out of the ivory tower. Here I share a really personal piece. It’s a reflection on what I learned while conducting research with Trish Ruebottom on the sex industry. I end with some personal take-aways on being the subject of your own desire.

I’m revisiting my dear friend @ssballakrishnen’s book “Accidental Feminism” and I’m blown away by their beautiful, reflective, thought-provoking and awe-inspiring writing. I returned to this book to crack a theoretical puzzle; I’m getting a master class in writing inspiration.

“R u ok” my 12-year old texted me at 3.29pm yesterday. And then “R u safe?” He had come out of lockdown on his first day of 7th grade to the news that UNC was in lockdown, too and that a faculty member had died. “I couldn’t breathe” he said “I thought it could be you”. (1/9).

My daughter came to campus with me today and when we went to my office, she jumped in my chair and squealed:. I’M IN MOMMY’S BOSS CHAIR!!!. And thus the chair in my office will forever be known as such.

This paper began as a nugget of an idea when @ProfCrisGibson and I met for a conversation soon after we both joined @GraziadioSchool and I'm simply thrilled that it is now an in-press paper with a fabulous home.

We hope our theory of global work encounters will support the scholarship and practice of not only international collaborations, but also other work encounters across many kinds of difference.

By delineating the theoretical explanations for encounters that create cosmopolitan, hybrid, or optimal distinctive spaces, scholars can more precisely understand the opportunities and challenges individuals, teams, and organizations face in global work.

Just as we posited that literature on global work could benefit from further incorporation of concepts from diversity lit, we contend concepts from global work can enrich the lit on diversity. We hope this paper will encourage more cross-pollination between these literatures.

A key aim was to speak both to those researching global work & those examining domestic diversity, so we incorporated concepts into our understanding of global work that have been useful in understanding other dimensions of diversity, such as sex, gender and race, at work.

To support more precise theorizing and practical understanding, we discern these three fundamentally different spaces, the processes that take place in each one, and how movement might occur across them.

We propose that the global work literature includes all three kinds of these encounters and draws upon different theoretical perspectives, but has labeled them all global work.

In the third, optimally distinct encounters, differences are resources to be leveraged and present opportunities for learning. Collaborators may work together in a highly interdependent way, and adjust their processes to include different cultures.

In the second, hybrid encounters, participants work across geographies and assume differences can be set aside to create a “hybrid” space that transcends the norms of any one culture, but norms usually most closely resemble those from the higher status country or culture.

In the first, cosmopolitan encounters, participants perceive national differences that correspond to entrenched status inequalities that are assumed to represent distinctions in competence or professionalism.

We define work encounters as instances in which individuals associated with different cultural, national, or geopolitical institutional contexts interact for the purpose of completing organizationally sanctioned tasks.
