In academia, you meet a lot of smart people. But even in that crowd, the intellect of some people stands out. Cecile was one of the people. Couple that with a deep compassion for students and it is hard to express what a sad loss this is for our community.

Is there a word in German for “having a paper rejected and a positive Covid test within 1 minute of one another”? Kränklichetraurigkeitablehnung?

Next time I need uniform random numbers generated, I will just bootstrap the distribution of nap lengths from my three month old.

Just taught a class using the RStudio IDE for the first time in years and…still don’t love it. I know I may be a dying breed but like omg let me choose my own file extension.

Epidemiology, beyond its limits! Check out our new paper just in time for #SER2022. https://t.co/KrQjOn1N3a Crowd-sourced by @EmoryEPI PhD students we systematically reviewed the evidence base for the 53 examples of doubtful associations cited by journalist, Gary Taubes. 🧵

Many examples used in Taubes’ influential 1995 article to denigrate epidemiology now have important public health implications.

https://t.co/EWMaKjEi88 New work lead by Ziyue Wu @ZiyueWu44618978 and @biosbenk with help from Patrick Heagerty and (minimally) me. Healthcare costs are notoriously difficult to model owing to both zero inflation and extreme values.

The tone and typical topics discussed on academic twitter (where names are public) vs. academic subreddits (where names generally aren’t) is fascinating to me.

Who are people doing the coolest #datascience stuff right now? I want to start each of my classes in the fall highlighting someone who is making a difference in the world with data sci. Particularly interested in representing a diverse group of folks. #rstats

Applying the method revealed more differences in neural connections comparing children with ASD to their typically developing peers. The paper has lots of pretty pictures 😍 check it out! 11/

We use ideas from causal inference + doubly robust, machine learning-based estimators {drtmle} to describe an approach for determining whether and how we can correct for these exclusions. 10/

Rather than studying a whole range of kids with ASD, we may be focusing attention on just one type of kid. For example, we may be uniformly leaving out kids with more severe forms of ASD. 9/
