Enough with the surveys already. I guarantee your dept. and university have DEI issues which need to be addressed. Hire professionals. Provide funding. Build a network of resources. Grads (etc.) can't be expected to do all this work for free in addition to science and courses.

The faculty job search season is finally over for me. I applied to 25 positions, got 9 Zoom interviews, but no offers. It has been REAL HARD doing this academic thing while financially supporting my parents at the same time. I am not sure how much more of this I can handle!

People can be both great scientists and racist assholes at the same time. Saying "we have to judge them by the standards of their time" is gaslighting POC trying to succeed in Bio, yet we CAN'T separate racism from the very thing we're trying to make careers of

Naturally, some parents see this as a benign survey. They want to know what language is spoken at home so the school can improve our education, right? Instead of improving our education, asking what language is spoken at home was used to CREATE BARRIERS. AND THIS STILL HAPPENS.

The common denominator is our identities. We all spoke Spanish at home. You see, when enrolling children in school in the United States, schools ask you what language is spoken at home. Limited options are given and parents are forced to pick one.

I just finished making a lecture on the kidney and vasopressin and aquaporins and now I’m so excited for @bhjuarez to figure out how all this related to reproduction in 🐸s

Today's a good day to prepare a #bilingual dissertation presentation, para que mis padres me entiendan. #AcademicChatter anyone have any ideas or tools to help? I can't be the only one who has tried this before

I am lucky to have them and recognize that not everyone has a supportive family. This, among other reasons, is why I think one of the most important things scientists/educators can have is my favorite word: empathy. Thanks for coming to my #MExTalk 🇲🇽

Would y'all be interested in knowing what I learned about making dual language presentations? Cause it was hard 😂. Calling it dual language now cause I had to balance audience understanding in both languages and I cannot speak in both languages for all slides.

Relative to what? If we try absolute numbers, BIPOC grad students make up less than 20%. The number is closer to 30% for undergraduates, but 66% students still come from the top 20% of the richest homes in the country. Stanford still has a VERY long way to go.

1/N. A few notes on my first publication: Publishing this first paper was HARD. Luckily I have had great mentors at all stages, great funding, and great opportunities. Reaching this point was hard because juggling Bachelor's through PhD work has been *quite* challenging.

I fkn get this. We're forced to be cautious and "play the game" much more. "I realized then that marginalized groups face a dilemma in science: The cautious strategy they adopt to succeed can ultimately be a hindrance, keeping them from reaching the upper echelons of science."

GG Simpson had Imposter Syndrome. "I was intensely interested in evolutionary theory, but for about my first ten years there I did not think I knew though to judge extant theories well or perhaps even to add something to them". From "40 Years Later" section in Tempo and Mode

One of my student evaluations referred to me as a patient and inviting instructor that allows them to learn and thrive in the class. I needed this today 😳😄😭😭

PSA: Thru grad skool others have assumed me to be an undergrad, a janitor, and I've been referred to by the name of the only other brown person in the department (MANY X's) Now I'll add "international postdoc" to the list 🙃. Don't assume if... if nothing. Just don't assume 🙂.

New paper!! Interested in water uptake and water loss? @LOB_SU @csuci developed a conceptual model for the effects of water and temperature intxns on water loss. We also report new water loss and uptake data for Phyllobates terribilis, cane toads, and Xenopus tropicalis!
Now in advanced! Water availability and temperature as modifiers of evaporative water loss in #tropical #frogs by @bhjuarez , Quintanilla-Salinas, Lacey, Lauren A O'Connell #ecology #biology #science

We were excited to welcome @bhjuarez to the @MVZUCB for #herpgroup seminar last night. He touched on one of his recent publications benchmarking the use of morphological measurements to approximate jumping function in frogs. Great use of museum specimens!

Cross country driving to the new postdoc = Meteor Crater, AZ. It's one of the largest impact sites in the US at 170m deep and a diameter of 1.19 km. It was great going back to some of my geology roots to say the least.

What's the common denominator? How is it that a bunch of Latina/o academics had the same experience in multiple states? How is it that the same "mistake" or selection of classes was made several times in different school districts and in different states.
