Check out that p99 cliff!. I spent 2024 shipping our next-generation Lambda Extension, which offers an 82% improvement in cold start time, better aggregation and flushing options, and lower overall overhead – all in a substantially smaller binary package. How we did it, below:

Real-time audio processing is an extremely interesting corner of performance engineering. You've gotta process data faster than it streams in, otherwise the work is wasted. The engineering team behind CoScreen just open sourced a new library, dtln-rs, suitable for removing noise.

Right now AI feels like using a 3D printer. If you stand in front of it and say "make me an MRI machine" you get a puddle of garbage. But if you've got full command of a project and want to test 3-4 different components to find which is best, it's a massive productivity boost.

Mark Zuckerberg is offering top research talent pay packages of up to $300 million over four years, with more than $100 million in total compensation for the first year, WIRED has learned. Meta has made at least 10 of these offers to OpenAI staffers.

New house has a wifi-enabled sprinkler controller, which stores the password in plaintext. Is that bad? That seems bad.

Anthropic let Claude run a vending machine. It's a very cool exercise, and at least I'm not the only one rolling my eyes at repeatedly correcting the LLM and hearing "You make an excellent point!"

Most of my programmer friends tell me that chatbots are a massive improvement and their work is now far far more efficient. As a consumer I have noticed literally no change whatsoever in the quality or price of chatbot-assisted software. What's going on here?.
