"Haitians have hardly failed to notice that they are being forced to seek refuge in the country that has made their own unliveable." My new @lrb piece is about Haitians at the US border, the rhetoric of "invasion" & "surge," & the limits of asylum law. https://t.co/mUhxpnTqQy

"Although language alone can’t solve much, it is a prerequisite to effective resistance. We should be wary of dichotomies: “refugee” versus “migrant,” “political” versus “economic,” “legal” versus “illegal.” These elide the mortal danger that many migrants have for now escaped"

"The system is a mash-up of bureaucratic absurdity and colonial-era othering, as if Kafka and Fanon had conjured it from a mutual nightmare." Reactivated (fn) to share this, online today in @thebafflermag, about the "migrant crisis". https://t.co/Ac2KHnYWCq

The United States offers some migrants some protections, but these are temporary. Pooja Bhatia describes the experience of Haitians in Boston, who navigate complex bureaucracies with no guarantee of something stable at the end of their struggle. https://t.co/9imfa7P6WI

President Biden deserves enormous credit for bringing the nation back from Covid, reinvigorating our economy, moving us forward to address climate change, among many other accomplishments. He’s been an excellent president. And today, he’s shown that’s he’s a true statesman.

Yes, asylum seekers are in the country legally. The current law in the U.S. allows any noncitizen, whether or not they have a valid visa, to enter the country and claim asylum. This holds true regardless of one’s legal immigration status. Get the facts:

Are asylum seekers legal or illegal? While their stay in the U.S. is lawful, they face many challenges.

Asylum is not a "loophole." It is the law. Providing access to it is required by U.S. & international statute. These are facts. Facts are our job. How & why do the biggest news organizations in the U.S. publish & promote blatant inaccuracies on immigration? It is irresponsible.

In his statement today defending his executive order, Biden said, “I say to you be patient and the good will of the American people is wearing thin right now.” That’s true, in part, because Biden failed for so long to push back against GOP demonizing of asylum seekers.

I’m truly at a loss for words. So many people wrote off India’s election as another landslide win for the fascist Hindu Nationalist BJP party and PM Modi, only for rural Indians (the most underestimated) to show out in DROVES and vote against BJP. I am beaming with pride and hope

One of the biggest stories this election is that the constituency the city of Ayodhya is a part of, where Prime Minister Modi inaugurated a temple, and which was expected to dominate this election, has been lost by Mr. Modi's BJP by a significant margin. #India

"Our job, as readers and writers alike, is to look more closely, to rupture the familiar, to notice." @sanjenasathian's terrific new essay on Freedom Songs has me thinking about nationalism, the novel, the slow accretion of ethno-hatred— and resistance.

I am simply refusing to post anything more about this executive order until someone can tell the public what will actually start happening at the border in terms that do not imply the president has magic powers.

It is a very sad day for our country that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been invited – by leaders from both parties – to address a joint meeting of the United States Congress. Netanyahu is a war criminal. I certainly will not attend.

There is no other way to say this: the (lack of) reaction to the scenes of sheer carnage, burned refugee bodies, and decapitated babies coming out of Rafah tonight from the U.S. political and media establishments is nothing other than the normalizing, the banalizing, of genocide.

It's horrifying how everytime an attack happens Palestinians have no choice but to pick up their phones and record, record their dead loved ones with missing limbs as a desperate plea to make it all stop, their world is collapsing and they have to record it before they can grieve
