Mirror Indy is hiring a photojournalist. Through a national visual journalism initiative by @Report4America and @catchlight_io, @mirrorindy will hire a community photojournalist in July. The position is funded by RFA and Mirror Indy and the program runs three years.

🧵6/ The family filed a complaint with the Indiana Dept. of Health. The state found Options failed to do safety checks before the attack & didn’t properly assess her injuries. As a result, Options was required to complete a plan of correction, a promise to do better next time.

🧵5/ This isn’t the first time we’ve reported on alleged abuse at Options. Last year, we detailed widespread allegations of sexual abuse at the facility where former staff described how low staffing led to unsupervised patients fighting.

🧵4/ But, for more than a decade, Acadia has had a series of lawsuits and local and federal investigations across the country. A NYT investigation in 2024 found that Acadia facilities held people against their will when it wasn’t medically necessary to collect insurance money.

🧵2/ The girl has epilepsy. After the attack, her seizures got worse. Her mom didn’t know how bad it was until she got home and took her to the doctor. Doctors found hematomas from head trauma. Experts confirmed Options should’ve sought immediate care to prevent lasting damage.

This is Jaime Pasillas, a high school senior from Indianapolis. He dreams of becoming a lawyer. When he was 6, his mom brought him over from Mexico. In April, he was arrested for shoplifting $48.81 at Walmart. He has no prior criminal record. Trump wants to deport him.
