@humanisque @willlowthewhisp It's a very common norm, I'm not saying you did something unusual, I'm just trying to point out an inconvenient feature of the usual behavior around this sort of thing.

The gender and racial numbers are important evidence but are a red herring. The important thing is that 100% of the people left in the mainstream are complicit. They all failed to do their jobs honestly and uphold a good faith compact with the public.

Reading this Compact piece, I realized that I myself was in academia at exactly this time, and basically had little chance because I wasn’t a minority or woke. So I did this instead, which is much better, and helped make DEI illegal, which is very funny.

Tai Chi is maybe a closer fit to what you're talking about, but again probably the health/spiritual angle was played up as modern marketing.

CCP promoted "Qigong" in the '50s, unifying several source traditions more like premodern alchemy than like "movement systems," though daoyin in particular linked inner alchemy to specific functional postures, and one might legitimately ask why that didn't happen elsewhere.

Hatha Yoga as we know it didn't exist until Indians figured out how to sell physical culture to European colonizers as an esoteric yogic art; previously, the few postures described as yogic practices were adjunct to a primary meditative focus.

Surprisingly, even after I taught him to make the "k" sound, his ability to hear which sound I was making and use it to discriminate between words didn't immediately transfer to being able to do so when *he* is saying the word.

He can hear the difference, so I can guess which words he's saying, and he can shout angrily at me if I'm guessing wrong or happily tell me if I guessed right.

I've had to teach 3yo how to make some sounds in order to read some of the characters; previously, he was pronouncing his "k"s like "t"s, so that for a while I thought the "climber room" in his nursery school was a "timer room."

This seems pretty damning wrt the idea of teacher expertise, as in a just society parents would need MORE help figuring out nuance and modifications than teachers; shows that principal-agent problems are expected to dominate expertise effects.

ChatGPT pointed out that this book is optimized for children a few years older, and DI teachers' manuals would say skip if there's a motor mismatch.

Learnings so far: We skipped the writing portions of the lessons since his motor skills aren't quite there yet. The book doesn't make this clear, and to the contrary emphasizes NO SKIPPING.

The most important alignment fact about LLMs is which thing they destroy first: the system built on the pervasive normalization of making legally binding false claims, or the institutions that allow such claims to be adjudicated literally and not just customarily.

"Patrick do you really think the American practice of medicine is based on billing fraud?" I think we've architected a system which is basically incapable of line item accuracy on invoices but which, for social reasons, has to pretend those invoices are an allegation of fact.

I've been hearing things about Mentava (the Direct Instruction influenced reading app for small children) and asked my almost 3yo if he wanted to try it. He responded, "I want people to teach me!" So we're going to try starting the lessons in Siegfried Engelmann's book today.

I found plenty of old tweets where I was wrong, and dumb, and credulous, and missing the point. But while being wrong and dumb I tried to make sure everyone could hear from the people I disagreed with.

Journalism: the idea that somewhere, intelligible events are happening, which many people have an interest in knowing about, so paid specialists go find out what's happening and publish descriptions of these new events periodically for the general public. https://t.co/stjQyYe4Rk
