Headed to DC to visit @NASA HQ friends and represent @CenterForAstro at The Science Coalition's "Science of Space" event on the Hill, sponsored by @blueorigin @CTATech. Not an ad, just excited. Congress clearly is too.

Running theory that The China Syndrome (1977) is accidentally the most consequential film in history
Three Mile Island and Chernobyl convinced the entire planet nuclear fission was catastrophically unsafe. Despite the fact Three Mile island's containment system worked exactly as designed, preventing a genuine catastrophe. And Chernobyl was a catastrophe because the Soviets were

Genuinely curious whether the hover over the water and then lateral translation to the barge was intentional or a correction. Either way they clearly nailed it.
Great display of how different Falcon and GS1 boosters approach landing - New Glenn has the ability to nearly hover and translate if accuracy is a bit off. And they nailed it!

This dude made some dark pact with Mephistopheles, speedrunning some of the best astrophotography and most insane shots of all time
Immense planning and technical precision was required for this absolutely preposterous (but real) view: I captured my friend @BlackGryph0n transiting the sun during a skydive. This might be the first photo of it's kind in existence. See a video of this moment in the reply 👇

New rule, a milestone rocket launch MUST occur in a daylight hour of whatever country led the effort, the national public MUST be able to watch inspiring things that give hope, especially amid all this crud. My mom isn't getting up at 2am to watch Artemis III launch.

before and after moment for humanity's adventure in space. It's awesome for the industry (yes, including SpaceX) for other teams to succeed like this.

The screenshots are Claude's review of the full PDF of the 1994 CTIO proposal that ultimately led to the 2011 Nobel Prize in physics. This is a cheap cherry pick, obviously, and a human might come up with these criticisms too. But ... plz read the proposals.

Amid 13:1 oversubscription rates, our current observing proposal review model is clearly near a breaking point re: scale, and I worry that a quiet reliance on LLMs to help relieve that pressure will add yet more stochasticity to the process. Plz read the proposals. 😬
