Labels can impact politics. My paper @apsrjournal "What Happens When You Can't Check the Box?" shows when Middle Eastern & North African (MENA) Americans are excluded from identity categories, they assert MENA identity on relevant political questions.

When designing reparations policies, authorities must ensure Black Americans have a seat at the table from the start write Matthew D. Nelsen of @univmiami, @cvo_monique of @NorthwesternU and @asdurso of @Georgetown

As the beneficiaries of reparations policies, Black Americans must have a close part of the policy development process.

🚨New working paper 🚨Why do some conservative white people support legalizing abortion and contraception access? We provide evidence across multiple studies that some conservative whites want to minimize the growth of the non-white population https://t.co/k5rE9oXRwm🧵1/n

As identities become more visible and politically salient, addressing the consequences of category exclusion is essential, both for the integrity of social science and for democratic inclusion.

However, when MENA identity *is* acknowledged, answers to those questions are no different from when racial/ethnic self-categorization is not asked until the end of the survey.

Within the two survey experiments, exclusion of a "MENA" category leads to identity assertion (via response substitution) on MENA related questions, POC related questions, but NOT on questions unrelated to identity.

Across 2 survey experiments & in-depth interviews, I find exclusion from identity categories triggers the experience of categorization threat, a psychological response rarely linked to political behavior. This threat leads MENA identity assertion on relevant political questions.

MENA Americans are politically visible yet institutionally invisible, long categorized as “white” by the U.S. government despite neither self-categorizing nor racially assigned as such. Most forms don't include a "MENA" category when asking about racial/ethnic identity.

Google trend for "forty acres and a mule" over the past yr, peaking in Feb 2025, presumably from Kendrick Lamar's Halftime show. But who were the types ppl googling this phrase? Likely those unfamiliar. Our paper delvs into knowledge of & support for reparations-related policies.
Highlighting the mechanism of socialization, we first demonstrate that knowledge about reparations is unequally distributed in our national sample. Black Democrats are most familiar with “40 acres and mule” while White Republicans are the least familiar (7/12)
