That’s unconstitutional. NYPD needs a warrant, consent or exigency to search a closed container (including bags) on someone’s person. See People v. Gokey, 60 NY2d 309 (1983): Enjoy the lawsuits! NYC has paid out over $548 million for NYPD since ‘18.
Hochul said the bag checks will be mandatory when riders are stopped. They’ll be able to refuse to have their bag searched, though they won’t be allowed to enter the station. Read more:

Got the first acquittal of 2025 at my public defender’s office today in Queens! . Whew, being on trial for three weeks is intended. I couldn’t have asked for a lovelier jury and was so thankful that they were willing to talk with us after the verdict.
