Many of the systems we use in education are designed out of convenience. It’s convenient to: 1. Deliver traditional lectures. 2. Grade students on completion instead of mastery. 3. Require every student to work at the same pace. But convenience rarely leads to enduring change.

Absolutely true. Change isn't the problem - change without commitment and support is.
So often we hear that teachers are “resistant to change.” But the problem is that change is far too frequent, rarely enduring and almost always mandated. To restore teachers’ belief in the power of change and innovation, we need to empower teachers to be the drivers of it.

Too often teachers are given a brand new course or curriculum weeks or days before kids arrive. If teaching is truly an art, educators need the opportunity to continuously refine their work. Instead they are forced to start from scratch and it stifles their capacity to grow.

It’s scary that we know so little about our students after they graduate high school. It makes it difficult to invest in the skills that lead to long-term success. So instead of focusing on building persistence and self-direction, we target graduation rates and test scores.
