I appreciate the commercials, the yelling, and other noisy ways of recognizing the dignity of blue collar work (our heroes!). The recognition is long overdue. Now let’s insist that these jobs have benefits and compensation that reflect the dignity of the work.

Even as I long to get “back to normal”, I will try to take this time to sit with Maxine Greene’s question (via @ilana_horn): “what could be?” https://t.co/vxDJvwnaRg

Maxine Greene, a renowned philosopher at Columbia Teachers College, loved to teach. At 93 years old, she still held seminars in her apartment. During one of these sessions, she asked her students, …

Honestly, I long for “back to normal.” Normal is comfortable for me. @bpenuel helps me remember that “normal” is often unjust and uncaring. The good news is, there is no normal, just practices that have become normative. “Normal” is made by us. It could be otherwise.

The Weil Conjectures by @olssonic is mesmerizing. For a while now, my friends and I in the Montana Math Teachers’ Circle have been exploring the notion of “mathematics as disciplined creativity.” This book captures that feeling. https://t.co/Wma9KA4zSw

I'm appreciative of folks who shared how they are reaching out to their students as universities switch to remote delivery. Here's mine. #HigherEdMath #ITeachMath @UMontanaHumSci

It's so fun to explore fractions. Today we had a spirited debate: Who ate 2/7 of a candy bar? The question is not resolved. #ElemMathChat #UnitChat #DoMathInMT #ITeachMath #mtbos

The green person does not have 4 pieces out of 5 pieces. Does the green person still have 4/5 of a sandwich? This spurred a great conversation. The question is still open. (3/3) #UnitChat #ElemMathChat

Students agreed that each person gets 4/5. A common strategy is to partition and deal out the pieces. The "green" person gets the green pieces etc. (2/3)

What do fraction mean? A thread. I asked, "what does 4/5" mean? Students mostly said, "4 parts out of 5 parts." Then we did the sub sandwich problem, which involves (among other things) sharing 4 sandwiches equally with 5 people. (1/3) #ElemMathChat #UnitChat

@adinam225 @hatcherelli @mtrushkowsky @LarmourTX @TomFraserEd @HicksTigersMath This one, from @adinam225 was especially great, because we got to discuss relational meanings for the equals sign. https://t.co/8AFBGTb3Vj
@pwharris Strat 1: Double and Half: 9 X 152 9 X 152 = (10 X 152) - 152 = 1,520 - 152 = 1,420 - 52 = 1,370 - 2 = 1,368 Strat 2: Scale Up and Down 76 X 10 = 760 76 X 20 = 1,520 76 X 2 = 152 76 X 18 = 1,520 - 152 = 1,368 #mathStratChat

These passages, from Hutchins' "Cognition in the Wild," give me chills every time I read them. "Humans create their cognitive powers by creating the environments in which the execute those powers."
