This Christmas and New Year, Ekrem İmamoğlu is not with his family. He is in a prison cell in Turkey. Not because he is guilty, but because he is free. Not because he harmed his country, but because he gave people hope. Ekrem İmamoğlu faces a demand of more than 2,300 years in

AKP'nin yarattığı risk primi herkesin cebinden eksiltiyor.

Singapore did this btw but they were “behind”with a nice productivity difference cushion, and had the ability to backtrack, which they did. Like tax increases, wage cuts are much harder thus exchange rate/inflation have to do the work if conditions change, classical EM story.
@pseudoerasmus Yeah doesn’t make sense to discuss wages in a vacuum. At early 80s, Singapore even tried to force/“correct” wages up as a rationalization as they fell too behind vs productivity.

My favorite Braudel example of how mountains made it harder for the state to tax/control people was the early modern map of Italy onto which someone long ago had scribbled marginalia next to some mountains saying 'these bastards don't pay taxes'

don't try these stuff in an EM economy, Americans have a balance of payments cheat code, you don't
A few months ago, I said that a higher minimum wage can lead to creative destruction. Today, a new QJE paper shows exactly that: a higher MW yields "fewer but more productive firms". High wages often improve economic efficiency! It's a crucial part of the Nordic model.

Carlsberg, the beer company, was founded in 1847. In 1875, they founded one of the first industrial research labs. Even today, the impact of this laboratory is highly underrated. Some quick notes on discoveries made by Carlsberg: 1. For most of the 19th century, beer often made

Japan had to discard lower quality/lower complexity stuff as early as 60s(to Korea and Taiwan). China has the space and willingness to hold onto producing Temu sh*t.
back in the 50s, "made in Japan" was actually seen as a mark of low quality, and it wasn't until the economic boom and tech domination of the 80s that Japanese products started to be seen as high quality. i wonder if Chinese products are about to undergo a similar shift

When you’re hedging real financial risks>>>>>>>
During Trump’s last rally, Kalshi odds of him saying “Barack Hussein Obama” surged to 99% after he said “Barack Hussein Obamacare” But “Obamacare” does NOT resolve YES The first traders who caught the mistake bought NO and made ~100x their money

This is actually evidence of a general tendency of underestimation of East Asian GDPs, in particular China but not only. Helps to explain why Japan and Korea have mysteriously low levels of productivity given that other indicators of development are at the frontier level.
Nice piece here from @BrianSpegele. China is a big victim of Chinese overinvestment! Latest Penn World Tables show that by 2023 Chinese capital efficiency below even Japan's, and far below the US level, despite still being much poorer than either.
