An old German dug-out close to Mametz Wood. The photo was taken on 2 September 1917, more than 12 months after the wood was taken by the British.

Iron harvest figures for January 2026 “The month of January was a good start to the year. We had a total of 191 requests and approximately 18 tons of ammunition were found. Have you found ammunition? Stay away, call the police and DOVO will do the rest!” 📸 DOVO Sedee

3 years ago already — during archaeological research near Westhoek, we investigated this former German trench. In 1917, Commonwealth troops took over the sector and left behind this SMLE. Still the best-preserved one I’ve ever had the privilege to excavate. #FWW #Archaeology

Further to my rant about the melting down of silver war medals, this came up cheap on eBay, seller gave no name or regiment so I ‘saved’ it…. I’m so glad I did

Further to my last post about the silver war medal, a certain auction site is now full of adverts focusing on the scrap value rather than history

Heard at a military fair at the weekend “do you have any silver Great War medals”……. Yes plenty, what regiment? “Not bothered just cheap” the rise in scrap silver is going to see these being melted down again like many years ago, please don’t

Today 51 shells were collected in Zonnebeke. We suspect that someone has removed the copper pressing bands from the shells. This is really dangerous, at the end of last year someone was seriously injured after manipulating ammunition at his home. 📸 DOVO Sedee

Purchased for the price of a average plaque, a DCM recipient who died of flu during the occupation of Germany post war, strange that collectors leave alone because he wasn’t killed in battle and a sad way for him to die after doing so much

Hiding in a Sussex hedgerow are part of a chain of anti-tank obstacles. After the debacle of Dunkirk in 1940 an invasion appeared to be imminent. In this case the tiny village of Cripps Corner was designated a nodal point to be defended by a ring of some 750 concrete blocks.

This beautiful footage of a young Cornish man returning home to Polperro, Cornwall after working on ships during World War 2 in 1944 is the type of heart melting content that Hollywood have only ever been able to imitate. The more I watch, the more my heart and brain overload

The Leicestershire regiment card I’ve had for years and was unidentified until I was given the N staffs card by a friend, sadly this officer was killed 6 weeks before the armistice
