You can tell much about a man’s insecurities by the things he holds in contempt. Zelenskyy is a war leader and a humble, genuine hero. I can see why a coddled 5x Vietnam draft dodger might feel insecure about him.

It's been 30 years since @MaryPatKelly's book and documentary 'Home Away From Home' told the story of the GIs time in N.Ireland. On Ep. 1 of #AWeeBitOfWar, she joins @scottedgarni for a chat about the book, film, and the troops who came to Ulster in '42. https://t.co/iMm5kb6kpO

Everything in government comes with an opportunity cost and decisions should be assessed on the basis of contemporaneous information - Kabul was a tragedy as a consequence of poor GIRoA governance, the UK (and the FCDO) met its obligations

In the event, the UK did not have the contingent resources stood by to address the situation as it engulfed Kabul in August - nor was it in our strategic interests to have done so.

The FCDO had issued clear direction that all British nationals should have left Afghanistan and the ARAP scheme,to assess and assist those to whom we did have a moral duty, was on schedule for to complete prior to the estimated worst case for GIRoA collapse

I accept that have moral duty to alleviate human suffering, but we need to be consistent and it needs to be achievable. This was no longer the case in Afghanistan - why, for example, prefer Afghan nationals over Hong Kong citizens outside the British Nationals (Overseas) scheme?

We entered the conflict to assist the US and, in addition to the soldiers killed and wounded, spent around £40 billion over the period. If Afghanistan couldn’t govern itself after this time, what is our further obligation?

I think this shows soft and sentimental thinking by the British media. - Britain does not have any particular moral debt to the people of Afghanistan. Diplomatic Debacle https://t.co/CXB3RI1a56

The author in this week’s @spectator makes a fair point for those who fell in Afghanistan, but does miss the agency of the modern soldier - we made the choices which led us to Afghanistan, don’t diminish us
