Great empirical review by RMI using @Halcyon's large load tariff tracker on steps utilities/States are taking to manage cost impacts from data centers - Definition of ‘large loads’ itself has doubled in tariffs from 33 MW avg pre-2024 to 64 MW today - Collateral + exit fees +

PJM just proposed an update to the 2028/29 Base Residual Auction, scheduled for June 2026. What’s changing: 1. The auction-wide price cap rises to $550/MW-day UCAP - 1.7x the current $329/MW-day UCAP used for the latest auction (July) and the upcoming one in December. PJM says

BNP team vetted 60+ utility pipelines to develop a bottom-up build of load growth thru 2032 by region and by utility. -They get to a base case for US peak load growth of 141 GW by 2030 (90 GW data center, 50 GW other) vs. 85 GW bear and 222 GW bull -Load Growth by State (top

Impressive execution from Dominion on their 2.6 GW offshore wind project. Despite record inflation 2022-23, supply chain constraints, changes to RE credits, and a $690M hit from tariffs, they are on track to deliver project LCOE in line with their original 2021 (!) estimates.

More details here. Note the Virginia Clean Economy Act (VCEA) which mandated the 2.6 GW offshore wind buildout capped the project at $125/MWh, so they have come in significantly under. https://t.co/QA2kgyJVs2

First sign of incoming capacity expansions? Discipline has been tight thus far. -CAT is going to 2.5x their gas turbine (Solar turbines - this is one of the preferred turbines for BTM data center power) and large engine capacity, each from 2025-2030 vs. 2024 levels. -Targeting

This makes no sense to me. It looks like it's housed at an existing cogen plant site. Doesn't the cogen site itself use the waste heat of the generation to make the steam... While in Boston we famously need to burn oil for electricity when it gets cold.

One of the world’s largest industrial heat pumps is coming to Boston. A 35MW system will use energy from the Charles River and deliver steam to heat more than 70 million square feet of buildings across Boston and Cambridge — hospitals, schools, homes, and businesses alike.

Thanks to @robinsonmeyer for having me on his podcast to talk about 1) the role of energy policy and electricity prices in the NJ governors race and the future governing of NJ, and 2) the path forward for nuclear energy amidst all of the current market optimism

On this week’s episode of Shift Key, I spoke with @IrvingSwisher about about how NJ’s power prices became central to its gov race, whether the nuclear industry is in an AI-fueled mania, and what lessons power companies can take from the dot-com boom:

Early evidence of lower prices for existing users from interconnection of new large loads from Entergy in Mississippi. Customer rates 16% lower than they would have been without new large loads. Investments from Google, Amazon, Meta helped finance broader grid upgrades along

WaPo has good article on electricity costs. More demand amortizes fixed costs of transmission & distribution over more users and ↓ prices. But cost of new gen is higher than depreciated cost of existing system, which ↑ prices. If new large loads pay actual cost of new gen (and

Large scale BTM data centers to me always seemed like more talk than projects, but that is changing. The latest: a 1.3 GW (!) data center in New Mexico developed by Zenith Volts Corp. - "will not connect to the grid" - on-site solar, gas, storage - geothermal cooling (key to

PJM released interesting data on their IX queue past + present - More than 240 GW (!) of projects have withdrawn from the queue in the last 5 years - Many projects also face delays, since 2023: 30% due to permitting; >50% due to supply chain/construction delays - Last 5 years

Tight timeline! But it seems like this ANOPR is 100% certain to become a NOPR. Given that, seems possible that opponents will hold their fire until we get there. FERC has a lot of work to transform DOE's rough sketch of a proposal into a legal proposal.

Google and NextEra signed a 25-year agreement to restart the Duane Arnold nuclear power plant in Iowa. The 615 MW plant is expected to deliver power in 2029. The Palisades nuclear restart has created a pathway for other plants to follow.
