36hrs+ standoff ends with a temporary solution. Ppl are taken to other shelters, for 1 week. We are accompanying the people, me on a bus, my colleague driving behind. Unless the law changes, we will have the same crisis in a week, but @hhc_helsinki will continue to help them.

Yesterday and today, we are again on the road with the entire refugee team at @hhc_helsinki to monitor the situation of thousands of evicted refugees from #Ukraine. As of 21 Aug, ~75% of state-funded shelter places are terminated. 🧵.

What others can do?.- govt must repeal the unlawful decree immediately .- courts must rule on interim measures that would allow evicted ppl to access emergency shelters.- big charities (eg. Red Cross, Maltese, etc) have done Ø thus far despite enormous state funding. Do your job!.

- we monitor sites across the country, try to help ppl individually, deescalate growing tensions. On the picture is how our day began today at 7 am 80 kms from Budapest, in front of the previous home of 120 refugees, incl 80 children.

What are we doing?.- we submitted another complaint with COM over a month ago.- we represent dozens of families in HU where domestic courts are on summer recess, failing to even rule on interim measure requests.- we try to work&advocate w/ all actors to reverse this nightmare.

This is clearly in breach of EU law, Hungary must provide basic accommodation to beneficiaries of temporary protection. Full stop.

The rest were literally put on the street yesterday. As the govt refuses to be transparent about actual numbers and shelters, we can only estimate based on our monitoring that ~4000 ppl were hosted in state-funded shelters, but only ~ 1000 could remain after yesterday.

At the end of June this year, the govt cut shelter from those few who remained eligible for state-funded mass accommodation. As of 21 August, only those whose original address in 🇺🇦 is in an oblast 🇭🇺 deems to be affected by fighting & meet certain other criteria are eligible.

There are about 44 000 beneficiaries of temporary protection in HU. The government has already severely limited access to shelters last summer. We filed a complaint against those rules with the European Commission. There's a case file, but nothing further.
