Thrilled to share that I am joining

On this day (exactly 20 yrs ago), I stepped out of my first plane ride ✈️ ever to come from India to the US. SO MUCH has changed - but I am still as grateful!

Great

vibe, but could also be the story of 🇮🇳 SaaS!
Congrats

and team
@FreshworksInc

A PM on my team had a habit of apologizing before starting sentences. I gave him feedback, to not sell himself short. It's not just him. We all do this - often driven by impostor syndrome.
I didn't know what to ask him to do instead though, until I saw this. Say THANKS instead.
For years, I asked many incredible product leaders what a good product leader did (and what they did with their time). Now that I get asked the same thing, here's a list (this is less during the pre-PMF stage and more once the product is at some scale):

If you are in downtown Palo Alto this morning and run into a couple of girls selling lemonade for 50c, pls. humor them... they just learned the difference between selling features vs. benefits💥
Having transitioned from building consumer products to SaaS products - my *BIGGEST* observation is that the enterprise migration to cloud is as big (if not bigger) than the consumer migration to mobile post iPhone. It's not a "trend" - it's a fundamental re-wiring.
Shoutout to Anjali Bansal, Naiyya Saggi, Shanti Mohan and many more amazing women operator angels in 🇮🇳 we love and respect. (definitely in “Top 100” but not included here!).
Pls. tag the best ones below!
Congrats…another list where women barely made it, while men made generational wealth. 😭
We need to encourage more women to start investing in startups.
Great product people tend to show these 4 traits (we've seen this to be esp during a pandemic) -
1) Curiosity
2) Growth mindset
3) Reliance on first principles
4) Judgement (decision making)

🚨 Have transitioned to Venture Advisor at
@generalcatalyst
(and paused on new investing) to focus my time on helping build
@CrescendoCX
with my amazing co-founders and team. See our vision and theory of change below, and it’s off to a terrific start -
I will continue to…
Who I'm scheduled to / talked to today (6 calls) -
2 in India 🇮🇳
2 in Germany (back to back) 🇩🇪
1 in New Zealand 🇳🇿
Have 1 call in the 🇺🇸 later today.
'Silicon Valley' now feels like it's in the cloud!
All the folks dunking on founders & builders for one reason or the other - pls. stop. Build something great yourself, or get out of the way.
Esp in a nascent ecosystem like 🇮🇳, each new generation of founders has learned well from the previous one… they will, this time too.
Good friends’ grandparents in 🇮🇳 suffering from Covid -
Me @ 2pm: friends, can you help?

The way the community has come together is the biggest hope that we will get through this. Stay safe, everyone 🙏🙏
In the past 6 months,
@generalcatalyst
has made 6 pre-seed investments in 🇮🇳.
Here is a breakdown:
🤝 - 2 consumer marketplaces
🐇🕳 - 2 in web3/crypto
🩺 - 2 in health tech
We are the first/only institutional check in many of them.
India 🇮🇳 has led the charge in financial rails - wouldn’t be surprised if this becomes another chapter that cements some truly inspired governance + engg + empowerment.
India should support crypto as a pillar of its foreign & domestic policy.
It defends national security by preventing deplatforming, deters fraud via on-chain accounting, and offers a decentralized alternative to a new Cold War.

Was on Zoom early AM (night in 🇮🇳) - founder was speaking, and the power went out for 5-7 min. He picked back up from his phone and kept going in the dark until power came back.

"I think if you do something and it turns out pretty good, then you should go do something else wonderful, not dwell on it for too long. Just figure out what's next."

I love that
@googlemaps
has started including “Turn past the Starbucks...” or “Stop once you cross Walgreens” in its lingo. Makes it feel like a knowledgeable local is giving directions, not a newbie... and builds trust with every use.
Pet Peeve: using meetings to read from slides/docs, simply because everyone (other the creator) does not know what's in them. Best practice: sharing pre-read the night before so the meeting is a real discussion of the issues, with context available to all.

Starting a

subscription and a daily (!) meditation practice is probably the best 2019 move for me! Happy to share more specifically how I’ve grown (and how hard the journey has been) if there is interest!

Left: Google Founders
Right: Their mentor - Professor Rajeev Motwani
Professor Motwani (IITK CS) mentored Larry & Sergey grad students at Stanford & helped form Google (+co-authored PageRank)
He died in 2009
He mentored many other startups
It's important to remember him
Great to grab a meal after a long time with Kanwal Rekhi! One of the true pioneers, and among the first founders of Indian origin to take a company (Excelan) public. Thank you for having us

I grew up in India, where your circumstances at birth often define your prospects in life. So when I read 'Only the Paranoid Survive', Andy Grove’s memoir about leading Intel, I knew I had to find a way to Silicon Valley – a meritocracy where immigrants could change the world.
I threw myself into engineering at
@Stanford
and co-founded a software company just as the dot-com bubble burst. The company survived the tech crash, but adversity taught me that founders need the most support when they are struggling, not just when they are succeeding.
Most B2B SaaS companies’ health is tracked by 5 key metrics –
✅ Bookings
✅ NDR (net dollar retention)
✅ Churn
✅ Time to seats turn up (revenue)
✅ Geographic/global growth
A good product manager/leader can impact many if not all consistently and thoughtfully.

It’s a pleasure to host so many of our India seed and early growth stage portfolio companies in Silicon Valley this week - to give them a stage, make deep connections with one another and with key leaders here and provide space to reflect!
