@jeffreymoro So much of this, like all things, comes down to frequency— in every sense. .

@jeffreymoro Moro takes us thru thinking @ histories of signal & noise. Noise as excluded fr human need. My ? turns to how even as humans cannot sense sferics, we know that so many animals navigate by magnetics. So the story of signal & noise as a story @ not knowing what or how to know. .

in discussing the emplacement of field recordings, @jeffreymoro introduces a series of sounds known in sferics as the 'dawn chorus'— the sound of the sun hitting one's earthly locality at dawn. Amazingly, it indeed sounds like birds, who of course sing their own dawn choruses. .

Moro highlights how actual randomness is impossible for humans. Truly random #'s (and algorithms that produce them) are referenced to natural phenomena, for instance using atmospheric noise to generate entropy, important for instance for cryptocurrency! +

At @umd_AADHum Moro's research offers pathways into seeing how one might use narrative and art to intervene in science. In so doing, his work gives method to AADHum's interests in mining hidden stories embedded in our digital technologies. Follow along ⇢

Moro's work explores how atmospheric patterns become legible as data, both quantitatively and qualitatively, science, art, experience. "Sferics surround us at all time," but are shielded from us as our devices remove the presence of atmosphere— nature— from our electronics +.

I can't say enough about how excited I am to hear this talk— and to emerge ready to drop the word 'sferics' in regular conversation! But really, how often do you get to listen to the atmosphere and its objects, its electricity, its lightning. .
It’s the final Digital Dialogue of the Spring 2024 season!.Join us 5/7 at 5:15pm for "Sensing Sferics: Electromagnetic Noise and Environmental Signal," a lecture featuring @jeffreymoro, Assistant Clinical Professor @umd_AADHum. Register now ➡️
