I don't know how "breeding" slaves became a myth. Every WPA interview I've read so far (from a woman) has mentioned it. Owners were very much attempting to manage reproduction of their labor force this way.

Really been resisting saying this but...stop it. Stop appropriating Black women's freedom practices. Black women didn't vote to save the DNC. They voted as a tool, as harm reduction, for a candidate they wanted, or against a candidate they didn't. For all kinds of reasons.

My take: We just saw, in real time, the clashing of kinships within academia. The kinship of an old guard protectorate elite (and all of the violent wagon circling that necessitates) just crashed against a critical mass of academics who have rooted their kinships beyond the tower

I'm not against the cover. I'm frustrated by a historical shorthand (in this case visual vocabulary) that asks Black women to be and hold centuries of violence, but never delves deeply into the way that violence is personal, physical, and metaphysically enacted on our own selves.

Enslaved and free Black people had plenty to say about the times they lived in and they said it to white people's faces so there is no excuse for being a "man of his time." We can recognize that people lived in their historical moments and not make it an excuse for behavior.

Just a reminder that the academy isn't "easier" if you're Black, a Black woman, a Black Latinx woman, or whatever non-white category you want to imagine. Creating a Black identity doesn't magically slide you up the ranks of one the whitest academic fields of history.

When I pointed out maybe we should pivot to focus on where we were growing and invest in a) courses on Black and non-European topics and b) hire more Black and POC faculty, the committee looked shocked and confused. They hadn't even noticed the uptick in that category.
