Legends don’t come around often. And when they do… you pay attention. I’m honored to exclusively announce that the legendary fantasy artist Clyde Caldwell is launching a brand new Kickstarter project, and if you grew up on classic fantasy art, and D&D or Dragonlance goodness,

-40ish here in my neighborhood. Icefog so dense that I can see across the street, but not much farther than that. Great weather for staying indoors and painting minis!

The Sowers of the Thunder is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful books ever published.

A couple of nice arrivals from the estate of Edward P. Berglund, the writer, pulp scholar and editor of the anthology "The Disciples of Cthulhu" (1976). I'm honored to be keeping them safe here.

I think that Howe & Lee are to Tolkien as Frazetta is to Robert E Howard - the perfect lens to distill the subject matter into visual life. But I do think that pre-PJ Tolkien art had some brilliant creators in the mix (particularly Angus McBride); often beautiful & strange.

Pre-Peter Jackson Tolkien art is like a lost world trapped in amber, a foreign country to which none can return. Now everything is John Howe and Alan Lee filtered through Weta Workshop.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about drawing a map by hand. Yeah, it needs some digital cleanup & error-fixing, but I’m pretty happy with it.

Great set of hand-sculpted metal minis & resin terrain from a good friend of mine. We need more old-school Sword & Sorcery on the tabletop! https://t.co/FIIWXQmvPs

There’s nothing quite like the awesomeness of hand-made tabletop gaming projects. Like these spaceships made from clothespins. CLOTHESPINS!! Absolutely fantastic,

I suspect that another factor was simply that the elderly executives at the time were more familiar with pulp adventure heroes than they were with superheroes.

It's hard to believe in our post-MCU world, but lots of people looked at the success of 1989's Batman and didn't immediately think "More Cape Comic Superheros" They though "More retro aesthetic adventure heroes with iconic designs and colorful villains"

Seen in the wild - Chris Walsh’s BRILLIANT paint on my Dragon Ogres, next to their inspiration, the 1989 Nick Bibby sculpt. Unpainted models are available from me here in the US, or at Fenris Games everywhere else!

I am really enjoying research into Ray Harryhasuen’s concept illustrations ❤️ This stuff is a goldmine of pure, old school fantasy art.
