I am very sad to hear that Prof Zafer Toprak passed away today. He was one of the most important living historians of modern Turkey. Unfortunately, his impressive academic oeuvre on Turkey's socioeconomic modernization remains largely underutilized by scholars outside Turkey. 🌱

This is one of my favorite depictions of the anti-colonial dimension of the Young Turk revolution of 1908. I use it on the cover of my syllabus for "The Making of the Modern Middle East" seminar for several years now.
Egyptian illustration, ca. 1909, showing the nations of the Ottoman Empire dancing gleefully around a figure representing the “Army”. Other Muslim nations of the world are meanwhile miserably chained to the French, Dutch and British empires.

6-7 September 1955 pogrom against Istanbul's non-Muslim community was one of the tragic post-Ottoman episodes of collective violence against cosmopolitanism and coexistence. A vicious act of mob violence, theft, rape, and murder that still haunts Turkey.

My own research was very much inspired by Zafer Toprak's pioneering work on "Bolshevik Young Turks" and Muslim internationalism in the post-WWI period. He has been very kind and generous with his support. He may rest in peace.
