With this assumption, we developed a simple model that can predict how surface waves respond to the tide. This helps us understand variability in coastal wave climates, key to improving forecasts for coastal communities🏖️ maritime safety🚣‍♂️ coastal engineering🛠️ and recreation🌊!

This is because tidal environments create both an unsteady and inhomogeneous medium for surface wave propagation. To understand the tide’s influence we needed to treat the tide itself as a wave, effectively modeling the interaction as a long-wave short-wave interaction.

Interestingly, we found wave heights increasing on following currents - contrary to the steady approach to wave-current interaction, where we expect wave heights to increase on opposing currents through Doppler shifting.

Observations from @CDIPBuoys wave buoys show strong fluctuations in wave heights coincident with the ebb and flow of tidal currents. At Fernandina Beach, FL, wave heights can be amplified or diminished by up to three feet every 12.4 hours.
