In fact, I'd argue that a society with universal healthcare, childcare, higher education, etc. is "more socialist" than a society with a large co-operative sector but without those free universal public services.

One of my hot takes is that the welfare state is a socialist institution. Transfer income, decommodified public services, etc. are all as integral to the socialist project as social ownership of firms.

These young people are attracted by the cheap costs, convenience, and, unlike takeout and fast food, high-quality. There are even new trends of GenZers posting "secret menu hacks" for community canteens on Douyin.

Community canteens are not a new idea. They're becoming more popular in China. They are being built by the state for elderly food insecure populations, but they've surprisingly found a huge consumer base among young people.

I don't enjoy eating burgers all the time, but some days it's my only option to eat something without spending more than an hour's pay. One those days, I wish there was a public dining hall I can stop at for a quick, tasty, and healthy meal without breaking the wallet.

Working people often don't have the time or energy to shop for groceries or cook, so we rely on fast food to sustain ourselves. I used to always eat every meal at home, but once I start working full time, I often found myself stopping at a drive-thru on the way home.

Municipal grocery stores are a great idea, but I think socialists need to also champion the idea of public cafeterias, serving cheap, high-quality, hot, nutritious food.
