I'm thrilled to announce the publication of our new paper! It was a privilege to co-author this work, which was led by two exceptional #womeninSTEM, Bryndan Durham (UFL) and Winifred Johnson (UNCW), and involved a wonderful team of collaborators.

My 1st UG mentee @wlunews accepted an offer to pursue her PhD @UniversityofIl working on primate #microbiomes. She came into my microbiome class my 1st year as faculty planning on vet school & was inspired to do #research in my lab & hasn't looked back. So proud!

Used the #thankamicrobe idea of.Anne Estes @ Townson to teach my upperclass #microbiology students how we benefit from microbial metabolisms & it was awesome! Posted them in our dept and have thoroughly enjoyed catching visitors, staff & students reading them! See a few examples:

Teaching #microbiology lecture/lab for the 1st time next semester. Excited to model it after a more modern version of the field! Anyone have materials they'd be willing to share or advice on a structure (for lecture or lab) that works well to cover the basics + modernize?.

Check out our latest pub! Really cool study with potentially major implications for how we should be thinking about coral reef restoration and coral aquaculture endeavors. @AmyApprill @cole_easson @thatsasponge @SpongeSymbiont.
🚨New research🚨 .A stable isotope study reveals a nutrient recycling pathway in which coral 🪸 holobiont incorporates nutrients from sponge-derived matter. Interspecific differences in this process align with ecophysiological characteristics of the coral.

Excited to share that my final dissertation chapter is published! This work points at the need to further examine microbiome variation in tandem w/ host population genetics. Coral microbiomes continue to offer an endless wealth of research potential. #science #marinebiology.
Potentially adaptive bacteria in #SoftCoral #Microbiomes may shuffle in response to #EnvironmentalChanges, but the research presented by Reigel & Hellberg suggests that most changes to microbiomes are likely constrained by host genetics.
