The biggest flaw in IT has nothing to do with technology. It’s that our systems are still built on a 1970s mental model of information — what I call “classic IT thinking.” 🧵.

Spreading poor communication practices across multiple channels doesn't make poor information sharing practices any better.

The job of information technology is to facilitate communication. On a technical level, IT can send information around quite quickly. What it can't do is make people truly process it. This is why we have lots of specialists acting as filters and translators.

The ICK factor - most organizations do a terrible job of managing information. The cadence of information generation outpaces the ability to process information. The technology processes the information, but does the organization process it effectively.

I can't help but feel like we are taking the wrong approach to information management. What is the job that we really want information technology to do.

Thinking about Jobs to be Done theory in relationship to information management. We hire hardware and software to manage information for us. So while there is always new tech coming out, it is often more work than it is worth. #jobstobedone.

I am giving the email newsletter "thing" a try. I think I am on to something with this subject matter, but not sure there is an audience for it or if a newsletter is the right format. But you don't know unless you try.

How is the value of organizational knowledge increased or diminished by AI. Does knowledge become more valuable or more commoditized in a world of AI? I can see either scenario playing out.

#airoundtable are we going to let our decisions be outsourced to algorithms based on "best practices"? How will AI enable or thwart innovation? What comes after AI? AI is not the end, but just the beginning?.

#airoundtable What does AI really mean to organizations? It won't just be one AI, it is going to be multiple AIs and they are going to run into each other. Which ones take precedence and which ones feed into the others? Will there need to be management departments responsible?.

Thinking of starting a new roundtable on the organizational implications of AI. Do we have any clue what this is going to mean? It is about way more than replacing jobs. It is about decisions and who is making them based on what inputs and what algorithms. #airoundtable.

Thinking about the problem of #masscustomization and #complexity. The last three years of trying to buy anything makes me realize how unmanageably complicated everything has become. I wonder how much harder the world would be if we're able to customize even more.
