A mathematical group called 𝘋₆ comprises the six transformations that leave an equilateral triangle unchanged. These transformations — rotations and reflections — are not commutative. The order in which each is performed determines the final outcome. https://t.co/lPUVTvhUvD

I was asked to give a brief review of the black hole-string correspondence as a warm-up for a longer SITP-group discussion of a recent paper by Chen, Maldacena, and Witten. Here are my notes in...

@TradeTexasBig @QuantaMagazine The two assumptions in Penrose's 1965 singularity theorem are: 1. A trapped surface, where gravity is so strong that light cannot escape, like in a collapsing star. 2. The weak energy condition, ensuring matter has non-negative energy density, so gravity pulls things together.

In 1965, the mathematical physicist Roger Penrose proved that, given two simple assumptions, space-time must end at points called singularities. The paper has been called “the most important paper in general relativity” since Einstein’s. https://t.co/1dtLupkA7k

@errolmorris Sidney Coleman's contribution can be viewed in the 37th clip of the following video (just a little bit after the contribution made to it by @realDonaldTrump in the 35th clip, who immediately follows @IggyPop in the 34th clip): 5/ https://t.co/E5J4zidvk4

Today would've been the 88th birthday of Sidney Coleman. If it weren't for Parkinson's disease ending his life at only seventy, he might very well still be with us today. I'm sad that he isn't, but I'm thankful for his kindness and generosity towards me 3 decades ago. 1/
